Why does my Boxer have a bleeding chin bump and black crusty ears?

Poor Princess! That definitely sounds uncomfortable. These lesions can be caused by a skin infection, skin mites, certain cancers, food allergies, or even some autoimmune diseases. This is a very broad list, and can be narrowed down with a vet examination. Your vet may take some small samples from Princess’s skin and some bloodwork to determine what is going on and start the appropriate treatment. It looks like Murphy has an infection on his ear. If he plays with another animal, it may be possible he got a bite wound or scrape that has become infected. A scratch or splinter from a plant could also be a possibility. If he has allergies or an ear infection, he may have scratched himself. I think a vet visit is a good idea. In the meantime try to keep the lesion clean and dry. If he allows you, you can use warm water on a washcloth to clean it twice daily.

It may be from a reaction from a bug bite or a scratch that occurred or an infection in the hair or skin. Clean it with mild soap and water and apply neosporin but be careful to not get any in her eyes. Take her to your vet tomorrow for a skin sample to find out the cause

I am so sorry to hear that Boxer has this concerning mass. Because you have noticed the mass over a period of a few months and because it is bleeding repeatedly I would have it seen by a veterinarian. There are many possible causes for masses in a dogs skin including foreign bodies, bacterial infections, cysts, and several types of benign and well as malignant tumours. In the meantime, place an e-collar, or cone, on Boxer to prevent him from biting or scraping the mass. This will hopefully stop him from bursting it again, as well as stop him from possibly infecting the area. Measure the mass with a ruler so you can compare its growth in a couple weeks time. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I recommend a vet visit when you can. This appears to be a mass or growth of some sort. The vet may recommend doing a needle aspirate to collect some cells to look at under the microscope to determine what it is.

The most common reason that we see black crusting like that is when there is a small wound or mass that is bleeding a little and the blood is black when it dries. If it is a mass and was very small before and larger now, then it may need to be surgically removed. Since it has been there for a while, it would not be considered an emergency and the emergency clinic would likely recommend you have your regular vet evaluate it. However, if it is actively bleeding and you can't get it to stop, then it is certainly worth a trip to the emergency clinic. So, unless it is actively bleeding or bothering Zoey, I would contact your vet next week to have them examine it and decide on a treatment plan. We see a number of benign masses in young dogs and some require surgery to remove while some will resolve on their own. I would recommend having this spot examined by your veterinarian. Boxers are prone to developing tumors, especially mast cell tumors and it is possible that this spot on his nose is something like a mast cell tumor. Other more benign tumors are possible, or it may be an area of infection or a granuloma. Your veterinarian may want to take a sample using a needle (fine needle aspirate) to examine under the microscope and help determine what this mass might be.
