Dog bleeding after nasal cancer radiation: Is this a normal side effect?

Radiation is definitely the treatment of choice for nasal carcinoma and can be very helpful. It's not without local side effects at times, but does help with life expectancy, and can be stopped at any time if there are side effects that are too great. I think if you're up for it, it's a reasonable step, and one you can stop at any point if it's not going well.

Causes of nose bleeds are: trauma, foreign body in the nose, bacterial or fungal infections, low platelets, clotting disorders, cancer, tick borne diseases. The nose bleed could be from the chemo knocking her platelets down too low or sadly it could be that the lymphoma is in her nasal cavity. I recommend you take her to your Vet or her oncologist and have them run a CBC to check her platelets. They can also put her on a Chinese herbal remedy that can help stop bleeding called Yunnan Baiyao. I wish Daisy the best!!

I am so sorry to hear about Chyna. Your vet may have some recommendations for palliative care for Chyna, which might include a steroid such as prednisone to shrink the size of the tumor (unfortunately this is usually a temporary effect so won't last forever). This may help with the bleeding. Other medications they may consider could include a drug called Cerenia which can sometimes decrease inflammation and help with sneezing in some cases. To help with bleeding the vet may recommend nasal drops with neosynephrine which may help constrict blood vessels, or a chinese herb called Yunnan Baiyao which can help with bleeding problems.

I am sorry that she is having this problem and I am sure you are worried. Nasal discharge with blood can be a sign of infection, cancer, or possibly a bleeding disorder. If the antibiotics do no resolve the problem then your vet will need to do some diagnostic tests to help determine the cause. Your vet can run blood-work, take nasal x-rays, and/or rhinoscopy to see if a diagnosis can be found. I wish I could tell you the cause but am not able to without more information from tests. The bump on the roof of her mouth may not be related but you should monitor it and have your vet take a look at it. Try not to worry as it could definitely just be an infection.

I think you need to get a second opinion from another vet, preferably one who has a rhinoscope and can actually look into your dog's upper respiratory passages. By examining the nasal passages with a rhinoscope one will be able to see whether there is a tumor present or more plant debris or foreign material that may need to be removed and so stop the constant infections and bleeding. Your vet may be able to refer you to a relevant clinic.

I'm so sorry to hear that Spike is having this problem. From your history, it sounds like the nasal discharge started before the dental operation. If that is the case and the dental did not improve the discharge, then it might be time to take some x-rays of the nose and teeth. If there is a tooth that is infected at the root, it may look normal in the mouth, but may have signs of infection on x-rays. That can also cause swelling. The only treatment will be to remove the tooth. Cancer will most commonly cause bleeding instead of just normal nasal discharge, but is always possible. Unfortunately, it sounds like Spike needs some more testing to figure out what is going on and determine the best treatment to make him feel better. Good luck! I hope that was helpful. This is very important as I am afraid this could either be a nasal cancer or possibly a severe nasal fungal infection. A CT scan helps to distinguish these conditions and a biopsy will help confirm it. Rhinoscopy is needed in some cases to better visualize the nasal cavity after the CT scan is done.
