My dog has a black spot on its ear. Is it cancer or normal?

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. It is possible that this spot is part of Honey Boy's normal pigmentation of his skin. If you believe that this spot has appeared rapidly or suddenly, and if it is changing in size or appearance, I recommend making an appointment with your veterinarian to have it examined. Otherwise, you can monitor the spot over time and look for changes. Pigmented areas on the skin can be benign, but unfortunately, they could also indicate malignant forms of cancer, such as melanoma. Your veterinarian will be able to examine the area, and can take a biopsy of the site to send for histopathology to determine what cell types are present. I hope this is helpful!

Some skin changes can be normal with aging, however if the spot is rapidly changing in size or color, is raised, bothersome or itchy, or otherwise looks abnormal, it is best to have it examined in person by your vet. They can take any samples as needed for testing or provide treatment as needed.

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. My dog's brown spot on back is turning black. Should I be concerned?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Pigmentary changes to the hair/coat are not that unusual, especially if there are no underlying lesions. If your pet ever sustained an injury to that area in the past, even a mild infection or burn, the hair follicles can be affected & color can change months to even years later. So, if she is not bothered by the area, you feel no lumps, bumps, roughness, see no redness or dermatitis, then this may just be a normal change in an unusual area. Just mention it to your vet at your next visit. Take care.

Should I worry about my dog's dark, flat, non-itchy skin spots?

However, continue to monitor them closely because sometimes skin cancer such as melanoma can start like that. If these ever become raised or seem to bother him or appear to be spreading, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. My dog's skin is darkening and he has a head lump. Could it be cancer?

The lump may be a benign or malignant growth. This could even be an infection. This cannot be completely assessed just by looking at pictures or a description and usually requires sampling such as fine needle aspiration to determine its origin. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have him evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign.
