My dog is biting irritated skin after e-collar removal. What's wrong?

The skin looks perfectly healed. However it will take a few months before the internal stitches have dissolved. So I would still put en e-collar on Bell as long as he attempts to lick the incision.

You’re right that it can be hard to tell if the cuts came first or after the licking started. It’s possible that the skin was irritated (we call it clipper burn) after grooming, and since dogs lick areas that are uncomfortable, it makes the whole situation worse. The best thing to do is to prevent Pepper from licking anymore. He can wear an e-collar/come for a few days. If the skin isn’t looking better 24 hours after wearing the cone, it may need medications so Pepper should get checked out by his vet.

If Casper is biting at it, it could be that this is an irritating skin rash. I'd put an Ecollar on him to keep him from biting at it (you can make one at home), and make an appointment for him with his vet. It looks like that spot on top of his head is very irritated and possibly infected. It could be from fleas or from irritation from the E-collar. If this is the only spot and he is not too itchy, you could try putting f some topical antibiotic ointment on it. If it does seem to be bothering him or if he has other similar spots elsewhere on his body, I would recommend taking him in to the vet to be evaluated. They can give you some medication to prevent the hair loss and infection from getting worse.

I would recommend getting a larger ecollar and let your veterinarian know that this has occurred. He probably is trying to get to the sutures and this is the only area he can reach. This will get worse if he keeps licking. Your vet may just extend his antibiotics or just tell you to keep it clean. His incision looks great! It looks like Panda had an insect bite or a small injury to the skin under the collar and either she scratched it or the collar rubbed the area. Sores under collars in the summer when it is hot and humid can become more inflamed than normal. Please leave the collar off for a few days if you can and clean the area with an antibacterial soap. After rinsing and drying it you can apply a thin film of antibacterial ointment to help it heal and keep the the area protected from dirt. This should heal in a few days. It appears to be a small mass or skin tag. You can place an e-collar (cone) on him to prevent further licking or chewing. This may be enough to allow healing. If not, have him examined by your veterinarian. If the spot has become infected, Ghost may need antibiotics. Anti-inflammatory medication may provide relief. A simple fine needle aspirate can also be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology if indicated. This may provide a diagnosis.
