Why does my chihuahua mix bite when I clean his rear or pick him up?

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua (Long Coat) | Male | neutered | 1lb

Hello our newly rescued pup Frito is a chihuahua mix he 1 years old he won’t let us clean his but if he doesn’t like what we calmly command him or pick him up he gets aggressive and bites other then that he a real sweetheart licks and snuggles

Frito is really cute!!! I recommend having your vet check to make sure that he doesn’t have enlarged anal glands which could be causing some discomfort/even pain back there. If he doesn’t have any anal gland issues, you can try restraining him in a thick towel before wiping his butt if he needs it to avoid getting bitten. Good luck!

From a behavior standpoint, the answer to your problem lies in four words in your question: "he won't let us." Many times, people with small dogs tend to think of them somewhat as dolls, not needing the training and discipline so obviously included in a larger dog's upbringing. I ask you to think about this: how big is he, and how big are you? And he is calling the shots here! I would suggest that you NOT pick him up in the normal course of your lives. Don't try to make a "purse pooch" out of him. A beginner obedience class may help you to understand how to relate to him as your dog and not your equal or superior! The instructor will be able to teach you how to deal with his attitude and help you to get from him the kind of behavior you are looking for.

How to stop my dog from biting other dogs when I pick them up?

Many dogs become excited when you pick up another dog, and will jump and nip at the dog in your arms - this is especially common with herding dogs, as they tend to be very motion-sensitive and love to nip :) I would recommend carrying treats in your pocket at all times. When you need to pick up your Chihuahua, toss a handful of treats on the ground first to briefly distract Winslow. Once he's finished, praise him for staying down (do this quickly, before he has a chance to jump!) and drop a few more treats on the ground for him. This helps to keep his attention directed down, rather than up at you and your other dog, and also rewards him for staying calm and keeping four feet on the floor. Over time, you can begin to use fewer and fewer treats as long as he is doing well.

Why is my chihuahua aggressive and biting me when I pet him at night?

Any continued abnormal symptoms (longer than 24 hours) warrants a vet exam. I cannot tell you what is wrong with him just by your description. I can tell you that you need to be diligent about getting weird behavior changes checked out . Behavior changes could be due to an underlying medical issue (pain somewhere in his body, vision problem, etc) or a behavioral issue. It is always best to rule out an underlying medical issue first before just assuming it is behavioral. I suggest you get him to a vet for an exam.

Why is my dog biting his butt and his anal glands are wet?

I would try feeding him some canned pumpkin with his next meal. This will sometimes help dogs naturally express their anal glands. By tomorrow, if his condition is not improved I would have a veterinarian clean them out. They can become impacted and infected.

Why is my Chihuahua in anal pain and terrified after neutering?

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This is possibly due to anal gland issues such as anal gland infection or impaction. Other possibilities are certainly possible. I recommend that you have Cletus evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to treat him based on examination findings. Good luck!

My dog bites his tail and whines after grooming. What can I do?

Two causes come to mind: 1) Hachi picked up fleas at the groomers and now they are congregating in the tail area and are biting him. Check the base of the tail for fleas and fea dirt and use a flea preventive regularly. 2) Unfortunately many groomers think they know how to empty anal glands and when it is to be done (even when there is no need to!) and do it wrongly, squeezing hard from the outside. THis often bruises the anal sacs and the area around them and starts to get inflamed and hurts. If you can rule out fleas, I suggest you take Hachi to your vet for an exam of the anal glands. He may need an antiinflammatory to resolve the irritation and possible pain.
