Why is my dog biting his butt and his anal glands are wet?

Hello. She may be having some irritation from her anal sacs/glands. These can become impacted or infected and are itchy or painful. A veterinarian or even some groomers can express these for you. Try calling a grooming center to see if they offer just that service alone to keep your costs low. There may even be instructional videos online to teach you how to do it yourself, but it can be unpleasant and most dogs do not like it. Sometimes adding some canned pumpkin to your dogs diet may help with anal gland issues. The added fiber can help to bulk up the stool and allow for the anal glands to be released when the dog defecates. If Jeter seems uncomfortable (licking around his rectum or scooting) then it would be a good idea to have a veterinarian check his anal glands and express them. The veterinarian can also ensure that Jeter does not have an impacted or infected anal gland.

If you are noticing him bite near his anus, then it is possible that this is due to an impacted or infected anal sac. It could also be due to other anal/rectal issues causing irritation like pinworms, or allergies. If your dog is biting you or other people/animals, then this may indicate that he/she is painful, but definitely would not be a specific problem with anal glands. His anal glands may be full again. Normally, they are expressed during the act of defecation. You are quite brave to do it on your own! Not many pet parents would do that. If you feel comfortable doing it again, do so but gently. If the problem persists, you will have no choice but to seek veterinary attention. Clinics and veterinary ERs will see patients. If left untreated, Scooby could form an abscess which is very painful and may require sedation to lance and drain. Please, get him seen by your local vets as he likely needs anti-allergic medication and a good quality flea and tick prevention. Also his anal glands should be emptied. You can put a couple tablespoons of canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling) into Evie's food to add fiber to her diet and to make things "move along". If this does not help, it could certainly be due to full or impacted anal glands. In this case, your veterinarian will be able to express Evie's anal glands to relieve any discomfort and to assess if there is any infection causing the problem.

Poor Buddy! This is a common behavior when they have full anal glands. Anal glands are 2 glands, one on each side of the anus, that holds a foul smelling material. They are there to help naturally lubricate a dog's bowel movements, but not all dogs properly express them. I would take him to your vet clinic and see if they can express his anal glands. Also, he could also act this way and lick everything if he is really itchy, anxious or just uncomfortable. If he doesn't improve after his anal glands are expressed, then I would have your vet take a look at him to ensure he doesn't have an infection or something else going on causing these behaviors.
