My dog bit a metal pipe, his gums are bleeding. What should I do?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 3 years old | 53 lbs

My dog bit a metal drain pipe (see photo) and bent it quite well when a chipmunk ran up it. He manage to scrape a few of his teeth and cause bleeding to his gums. I can’t see any real cuts, but there’s a decent amount of blood. How do I help him heal? Should I be concerned about infection?

I would bring him to your vet to have him sedated and his mouth examined. Your vet may also recommend a dental X-ray to make sure no teeth have been cracked by biting the pipe which may need to be removed to prevent a tooth root or gum infection.
