My dog has a weird belly bump after mast cell tumors. What is it?

This is often differentiated by a test called a fine needle aspirate (FNA) which is a pain free, inexpensive and easy procedure which in most cases will help reach a diagnosis. Sometimes a biopsy is needed for a definitive diagnosis. I recommend that you have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I am really hoping for something benign. Hopefully it's nothing but any red, raised mass is concerning for a skin cancer called Mast Cell Tumor. Many other lesions though can look this way but I think it's always best to play it safe and have it tested. Aspirations of a mass are generally quick and easy and most pets tolerate them well. The fact that it has been growing slowly is good though it can still be a malignant tumor and removal would be recommended if there is no evidence of cancer spread to other organs. It probably changed in size and shape as a reaction to the aspiration. Given that it is so close to her mammary glands this may be a mammary tumor. Further recommendations would be made after it is removed and the biopsy read out. Good luck and have a great day!

I would recommend having this surgically removed and then send out the actual tissue sample for a definitive diagnosis. The test to have the slide interpreted and also to have the tissue sample interpreted are the exact same cost typically or very close in price, which is typically over $300. Why spend that much to have a slide interpreted when you can just have it removed and get a more definitive answer with an actual tissue sample being interpreted? The needle aspirate test is great but unfortunately it does not provide one with a definitive diagnosis. Since this is near a mammary gland I would want to know for sure what this is. It doesn't look like a MCT, but they can take on different appearances. It maybe a benign growth or skin tag. The only way to find out would be to have Buddy examined by your veterinarian. A fine needle aspirate can be done in the clinic to collect samples for pathology. This may provide a diagnosis. In the meantime, monitor it for rapid change or growth. Consider having it removed if it causes pain, impedes motion or changes rapidly.

Definitely have your vet take a look at this. I would recommend removal & having the tissue sent for pathology for identification. It looks like a full excision should be curative. Hope this helps.
