My Irish Setter barks and pulls at certain dogs. How can I help?

Using a Gentle Leader will help prevent her from pulling and lunging on the leash. You are going to have to do some training to try and solve this problem. First, you should teach her the "watch me" command so that you can get her attention when you needed. Next you should take her in situations that have very few distractions and use the watch me command when you see something that will possibly distract her. Once she makes progress in those situations, you can gradually increase to busier environments. Hopefully, with some patience and time you can get this problem under control. You could try to walk her with a Gentle leader which is a head harness and makes walking a lot easier. When the dog pulls, it turns their head back toward the walker which gives the walker more control and the dog learns not to pull. I would also recommend teaching her the "look at me command" and you can use that command when she is misbehaving.

When going to the dog park, I recommend that as soon as she starts to pull, immediately turn around and go away from the dog park for at least 10 steps, then you can turn back and try again. When she starts to pull, once again turn around and take 10 steps away. Give positive reinforcement with treats when she walks by your side where she is supposed to. The goal is to teach her she will get to the park faster if she doesn't pull. Blowing leaves are often a big trigger, and dogs want to chase them. This can be harder to directly train for because the wind is unpredictable. One thing you can do is give Sie a command to look at you. This can be "look", or "Sie", or another word you choose. She should look at you, and not at the treat. She only gets the treat when she looks at you. But if she can learn to stop what she is doing and look at you and away from whatever she finds interesting, this can help with many issues. Then on windy days, you can ask her to sit as the leaves blow by, and stay focused on you. Any training issue requires time and dedication to fix. You may try training Nora to focus on you. You will need a high value treat or toy that she gets at no other time. Start with the other dog far away. As soon as she sees the other dog, call her name, have her look at you (or even sit) and reward the behavior. Most dogs will generally learn that the strange dog means a reward for them. Gradually move closer to the other dog. There are many different training tips and I recommend to do some research. There is a trainer named Victoria Stilwell who has written many books addressing various behavior issues and I recommend to read some of her material. I hope this helps.

Penny is adorable! I suggest getting her into an obedience class or consulting with a trainer. She may be feeling protective of you, which is a good thing, but she needs to learn how and when to be protective. Obedience training is a great first step. Ask your veterinarian if they offer or know of obedience classes, call pet stores like PetsMart or Petco and ask who they recommend.

Try walking her with a Gentle leader and see if that helps. You will have more control over her if you use a Gentle leader.
