My dog's bark changed to high-pitched. Is it concerning or just tired?

While this could in theory be a reason of concern as some of the possible reasons is a tumor for example, this could also be due to barking too much while boarding. I would recommend that you continue to monitor Leo for now. If this does not go away on its own, have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment. They can then examine this. I would be concerned that she hurt herself somehow. Unfortunately, without a physical examination it is hard to say exactly what is causing her symptoms. I would consider calling your veterinarian if she is still having this issue when you wake up in the morning and having her seen. This could be due to a degeneration of the laryngeal nerve that is innervating the larynx being in charge of its movement (vocal chords included). Inflammation of this nerve and upper respiratory airways infection is possible as well. A clinical examination at your local veterinarian is essential to confirm these clinical suspicions and treat appropriately. Antibiotics may be needed. If Panfilo has been barking a lot and playing lately, it is possible that he developed a hoarse bark due to overuse. Similar to humans when a person screams / yells for a while, the voice becomes hoarse. His bark should come back normally without any lasting problems. I hope this helps! Sorry to hear that Bruno's lost his bark. A change in barking sound or a loss of bark can be associated with a few different conditions. While a collapsing trachea or an upper respiratory infection are certain possibilities, they are not the most common cause for this symptom. There is a condition known as laryngeal paralysis that is known to cause this symptom quite frequently. Regardless of what the cause is, it is unlikely to resolve on its own without some treatment. You should take Bruno into the vet for a physical exam and some diagnostic imaging. They will be able to tell you whether or not one of the above mentioned conditions is causing Bruno's current issues. Hope this helps!

It is possible that this is all related to Rose pulling a lot in the leash which ultimately could have resulted in some degree of tracheitis. This usually improves on its own relatively quickly. If this does not resolve in the next 3-5 days, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment. At that point, if nothing else is wrong, they may choose to start her on an anti-inflammatory medication. Good luck and have a great day!
