My Jack Russell has bad breath & sneezes. What's the best food?

Pet's info: Dog | Jack Russell Terrier | Female | spayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 9.1 lbs

My dog has really bad breath and she has been sneezing a lot. I just adopted her she is a Jack Russel Ter. and is 2 and a half years old. Also, what is the best food to feed this breed?

Congratulations! I recommend sticking with foods from companies that have a veterinary nutritionist on staff and quality control measures in place. This includes Hill's Purina and Royal Canin. The bad breath could be diet related, or she may have dental disease or another oral problem. If you have not yet established care with a veterinarian I would recommend taking Lola in for a physical exam. They can examine her mouth during that visit. Sneezing can be related to mild nasal irritation or allergies, but if she also has nasal discharge there could be more concern and I would recommend mentioning the sneezing to your veterinarian as well.

That seems unusual and I'm not sure the two are related. I recommend to get a second opinion from another vet. The breath itself can be bad because of tooth problems or a disease of the mucosa. Renal disease and diabetes will also change the breath. If Jack has been licking his rectum....odor could also come from there. Make sure to jack examined again while you notice the bad breath. He best diet for Ripley would depend on whether or not her remaining kidney is functioning normally. Dogs only need one kidney so it is possible that a normal maintenance diet is all she needs. If her remaining kidney is not normal she may benefit from a therapeutic kidney diet. Bad breath could be a sign of kidney insufficiency (uremia) but could also be a sign of dental or gastrointestinal disease. I would recommend asking your vet what is best for her situation.

My Jack Russell puppy has pale gums and trouble breathing. What's wrong?

Oh dear! Breathing issues and pale gums are always very concerning, so I would recommend taking Lollos to a vet right away. She may have a heart problem, a clotting disorder causing internal bleeding, or she may have been injured somehow even if there are no outward signs. Your vet can do blood work and x-rays if needed to help determine what's wrong and get her started on appropriate treatment.

Why is my dog having fishy breath, odd sneezes, and breathing issues?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Fishy smelling breath can be from either dental disease or from GI disease. If she is having a hard time breathing, it could be either heart disease, primary lung disease (airway disoders, asthma, infection/pneumonia, etc.). She could also be breathing up from pain, especially if she has GI disease, this can make them have abnormal breathing as well. I would be fairly worried and would recommend bringing her to a vet right away. I would bring her to an emergency clinic if your vet isn't open. Best of luck with Luna, I hope she feels better soon!

Food allergies can be very frustrating to diagnose since there are multiple ingredients that can cause a reaction. Consider an exam with your veterinarian. Discuss allergy testing, hydrolyzed diets, food elimination trials and antihistamine use during the visit. A food trial should last at least 6 weeks during which only the new diet should be fed. No treats, no table food, no other foods. Choose a food with a protein and carbohydrate source that Lucy has NEVER eaten before. This can be tricky but there are several prescription and OTC choices.

It would be better is she was switched to an adult dog food. Small breed dog foods are typically a small pellet. Eukanuba has a small breed adult dog food so you could try that and see if she is able to eat that food. You should gradually switch to the adult food as an abrupt change may cause some gastrointestinal issues.

Actually bad breath in dogs is likely related to dental problems. Tanner is an older dog, and if he's had no dental care in his life, then he could be suffering from severe gingivitis and dental disease.
