My dog has scars on his back paws. Are they a concern if he's not bothered?

Those could be healing injuries to the paw pad or it could be related to how she walks. Make sure your pet is not licking them as this can make it worse. Certainly you can have your pet examined by the veterinarian and this will likely get your answer at the fastest. Otherwise you should check the feet every day. Hello. This just looks like a bad scrape, but the skin actually looks pretty good. Just watch for any signs of bruising or pain ( he may limp or start licking the area ), but if he seems fine & unbothered by this, then the hair should grow back just fine. Thanks for using PetCoach! If the area is flat and has looked like this the whole time, a scar is very possible. Could be that she had some initial injury (poke with a stick, etc) and it has since healed but the skin still bothers her. It could also be a place that bothers her occasionally due to pain (if she has arthritis right there or some other injury that flares up occasionally). Finally, infection and other things are possible. As a first step, try a spray like this: It has a numbing agent for pain as well as anti-bacterial properties. This will not help if it is a scar. If it is raised/lump like, its time to head straight to the vet to make sure it doesn't look suspicious for something more serious. If the lesions get bigger or spread to the other two paws, then he will need to see his veterinarian. If he is limping now, I would have him seen tomorrow. Otherwise, you can bring it up at his next vaccine appointment. He may have a scab from a previous wound. In the meantime, make sure that he is not licking or biting at the paws. They are probably nothing to be concerned about. Minor scratches can be cleaned with a diluted Betadine or chlorhexidine (Hibiclens) solution. Dry thoroughly afterwards. Monitor for redness, swelling, discharge, bleeding, fever or lethargy. If Pepper is current on her vaccines, rabies is not a concern either.

It's great to see that you are rescuing this poor dog! He actually looks like he is a young dog - just has been neglected. I'm sure the vet will help you to make this dog look young again. He does look rather thin and the maggots you see in the poop are actually little worms. The vet will advise good medication to clear the worms and this will help him gain weight. His skin also looks unhealthy, so the vet should advise on a shampoo and possible treatment for mange. You are right to note that the paw pads are abnormal. They have been somewhat worn down. We often see this with dogs who run on the road for a long time or may have struggled to climb up something. This does not need urgent attention and should heal well within a week or two. According to the photos it looks like a mild abrasion in the central pad that is healing. For now I would just monitor unless signs of infection (redness, pus, foul smell, pain) or if any lameness present then I would suggest to contact your vet.
