Why is my dog's blood work normal with atopic dermatitis?

I would have your Vet take belly X-rays, deworm him and then I would change his food to a new protein source or a prescription food. If he doesn't have something stuck or worms then it is possible he has a food allergy. Another thought it to test for Addison's disease, which is decreased steroid production from the adrenal glands. It can cause weight loss, vomiting, diarrhea, poor appetite. I hope this helps!

If Sammy has been vomiting that frequently, we need to consider other causes in addition to allergies including parasites, gastrointestinal foreign body or intussusception, liver disease and inflammatory bowel disease. Since he is a puppy, a fecal exam, deworming and abdominal x-rays are strongly advised. Please follow up with your veterinarian to discuss these tests. As far as diets are concerned, a novel protein (rabbit, duck, venison, kangaroo) or hydrolyzed diet is recommended.

Vomiting and inappetence can be observed with conditions such as gastroenteritis, pancreatitis, dietary indiscretion, gastrointestinal foreign body ingestion and obstruction, among other possibilities. She may be having side effects to the medications administered. Hair loss and scratching are likely due to allergies. For this reason, I highly recommend that you have Shelby evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as soon as possible as I am afraid she is likely becoming dehydrated. They would be able to check for these possibilities and also check her hydration status and give her medications to make her feel better. Good luck!

If xrays and general labwork have been performed already, I would start looking for other possibilities causing this with more advanced diagnostics such as an abdominal ultrasound and GI panel to begin with. Another disease they could investigate is Addison's disease. This would expand the diagnostics to the point of being able to more extensively look into what may be causing this in him. I believe I see milk in the bowl you have in the picture there. If that is the case I would stop giving that right away. Domino is more than old enough not to still be getting puppy milk. If she continues to vomit after stopping the milk, then it's best to take her to your vet for a full examination and possible testing to determine why she is vomiting so that we know how to best help her. Also I would recommend bathing her in Dawn dish detergent to strip all the fleas off her for now. Make sure not to get any in her eyes and follow up with an oatmeal based or aloe based shampoo and conditioner to prevent her skin from getting too dry. She is old enough for Revolution topical flea and heartworm preventative from your local vet, so I would recommend getting her hat to protect her from the fleas here moving forward. Sometimes blood in the vomit can be seen with things like gastrointestinal ulceration which can occur secondary to medications, especially prednisone which is a commonly used medication for allergies. If this seems like a possibility, they would start her on medications for an ulcer. Good luck! I am keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!

I recommend that your contact your vet's office to schedule a follow-up appointment. Your dog may need further diagnostics to determine the cause of the vomiting and diarrhea. While blood work is an excellent and worthwhile diagnostic tool (and I commend you on having it done), it does have limitations. Blood tests are extremely useful for looking at the overall health of your pet. From the tests, a vet can learn if your pet's vomiting is caused by an underlying medical condtion like diabetes, kidney or liver disease, or an infection. Blood work can also reveal if your pet is dehydrated from the vomiting. Many of these problems may not be obvious on a simple physical exam, but if caught early can be successfully treated or controlled, giving your pet a longer and better quality of life. Sometimes blood work can lead to a definitive diagnosis, but oftentimes blood work results guide us as to what the next diagnostic steps should be (radiographs, ultrasound or more specific blood testing).
