My dog ate winter rock salt. He's whining. What should I do next?

No she/he should be fine if it was just salt. It takes a lot of salt ingestion to cause any immediate concerns in pets (salt intoxication). So if it was only a small amount you don't have anything to worry about. Just make sure to offer her/him some water and access to water at all times, so if she/he needs to they can rebalance their body by diluting out the salt. Also I would refrain from giving him/her any people foods that are high in salt for the next 24 hrs, only regular dog food. If by chance your pet did ingest a large amount of salt then watch out for signs of trouble which include ataxia (drunken walk), panting, mental dullness, and vomiting. If seen then it is best to take him/her to your vet immediately for treatment.

Hello, and thank you for your question. Licking a bit of salt from pretzels should not be dangerous for Goldie. The worst I might expect would be a bit of diarrhea, since Goldie is not used to eating this food. If you do notice some soft stool, you can try feeding small, frequent meals of a bland diet such as boiled chicken and rice for a day or two until her stools returns back to normal. If it was just a tiny amount for example, Bud being a large breed dog, that is not going to be an issue. However, if this was a large amount of water, I would recommend that you have him evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment as that can be an actual issue that requires therapy. Salt toxicity in a excessive amount can be a serious toxicity resulting in gastrointestinal and neurologic signs. I am hoping for a speedy recovery!

Ellie would need to eat 45 to 70 grams of salt in order to be at risk of a serious toxicity. Anything over 90 grams could be fatal. 380 milligrams is far below a dangerous level for a dog of her size. The amount she ate may cause some gastrointestinal upset and excess thirst though. Consider withholding food for 12 to 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Monitor for lethargy, tremors, ataxia (wobbly gait), or seizures. Symptoms typically appear within 3 hours of ingestion. The amounts of peanuts may put her at risk of developing pancreatitis due to the fat content. Monitor for vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain. Have her examined by your veterinarian if necessary.

Take him out to toilet on a lead only, and bring him right back in when he's done. If he still appears painful after this time, then I would take him into the vet for an exam.
