My dog ate watermelon rind. Is it safe and will he get sick?

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 10 years and 1 month old | 18 lbs

Good evening, is it safe for dogs to eat watermelon rind? My dachshund snatched it out of my hands and ate it quickly. So far he is not showing any signs of gastrointestinal upset. Thank you!

Watermelon rind is not toxic, but it is not especially digestible and could cause gastrointestinal upset. I don't think you need to do anything specific other than monitor for vomiting, diarrhea or decreased appetite.

Hello and thank you for reaching out to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Bananas are not toxic to dogs, but a dog eating anything out of the ordinary has the potential to cause GI upset. Dogs and their intestines are used to consistency, so if a new type of food is introduced, there is always a risk of GI upset, likely only mild in nature. Watermelon is also non-toxic, but should NEVER be given to a dog with the rind attached. Eating the rind puts your dog at risk of a gastrointestinal obstruction, or a blockage of their intestines, which is a surgical emergency. I hope this is helpful!

Watermelon is perfectly safe for dogs. A large quantity of watermelon could cause some temporary stomach upset, but it will not cause any major problem.

If he ate a large piece of the cantaloupe rind without chewing I suppose it could cause an intestinal obstruction, but probably not quite so quickly. If his stomach seems distended, if he seems painful or if he is attempting to vomit without producing anything I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian right away. Otherwise I think you could monitor for the next couple of hours and take him in if he vomits again. I would not recommend inducing vomiting at home - hydrogen peroxide is typically what is used and it can cause significant damage to the stomach and intestines. Also, it might not be helpful to induce vomiting since he has already vomited once and not all of the rind up.

Can my dog eat watermelon safely? How much is too much for them?

Whether an animal or person, the sensitivity to certain foods is not the same but varies among individuals. There isn't a toxic dose of watermelon. Dog vomiting undigested watermelon after 9 hours. Is this normal?

Merry Christmas! Yes, the food should have been digested by now, so it may be the watermelon was upsetting to her stomach. I can give you a home remedy for her to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. My dog ate a kiwi peel. Is it safe? What should I do right now?

Kiwis are not toxic, so that is not a concern. I think that if he swallowed the entire peel without chewing, there could be risk of intestinal blockage. Your options at this point would be: 1. Take Tucker to an emergency vet to induce vomiting 2. Watch and see. Signs of intestinal blockage include lethargy, vomiting, decreased appetite, diarrhea, or no stools. If he did chew up the peel before eating, then it should pass without much concern.

I'd keep an eye on Milo for now and try a home remedy to see if that helps. Sweet potatoes are not toxic to dogs, so I would not normally expect this to cause any problems apart from some GI upset if she isn't used to eating human food like this. So your pup will probably be just fine :)

I would not worry too much. The worst thing that might happen is that she will get loose stool for a day or possibly regurgitate/vomit some of it. I would let her skip a meal to settle the stomach and guts and she should be fine. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water available.
