My dog ate too many cucumbers & bell peppers. What should I watch for?

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Female | spayed | 17 lbs

My five-year-old Shih Tzu ate a bag of sliced cucumbers and bell peppers. I know those things won’t actually hurt her, but she ate a lot of them. Is there anything I should watch for? She has never gotten into food for trash like this before.

I would not worry too much. The worst thing that might happen is that she will get loose stool for a day or possibly regurgitate/vomit some of it. I would let her skip a meal to settle the stomach and guts and she should be fine. Make sure she has plenty of fresh water available.

Hi and thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Greta may experience something called food bloat, if she got into a large amount of food. The food itself may not cause an issue but the amount of food may cause her to bloat and cause some abdominal pain, lethargy, diarrhea, they seem uncomfortable to get up or even retch/vomit. If Great shows any of these signs, I would take her to see a veterinarian sooner rather than later. If she is fine and shows no urgent clinical signs/or her signs are mild, then it is OK to monitor her. Good luck!

My dog ate a cayenne pill. Will she be okay? What should I watch for?

Hello, thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I would not be too worried about this. The most that would happen would be that Nudge would get an upset stomach. An upset stomach can lead to diarrhea and vomiting which are usually self-limiting (meaning they will resolve on their own within 12-36 hours). If she begins showing any signs of an upset stomach that don't resolve in that time period then you should take her to your vet for treatment. Capsicum (cayenne) is not toxic to dogs. You should definitley monitor him for any abnormal signs like bloating, vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or abdominal discomfort. They might pass through with no problem but he could get some gastritis/enteritis from eating so many at once. Have him examined by a vet if you notice anything abnormal.

If you are worried she ingested an object, like a sock or shoe then you would watch for signs of gastrointestinal upset such as vomiting, anorexia, abdominal pain, lethargy, or straining to defecate. If you are worried about a toxin ingestion these signs can vary widely and can include GI upset, rapid breathing or heart rate, excessive drooling, trembling, seizures, drunken appearance/gait, dilated pupils, pale gums, lethargy. If any of these signs occur seek veterinary care right away.

My Shih Tzu ate watermelon seeds and is nauseous. What should I do?

I'd keep an eye on Milo for now and try a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he's still nauseous on the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. He may have an upset stomach but I don't see any ingredients that are toxic. As long as he feels okay, I'd just keep an eye on him, but if he gets worse, becomes lethargic, refuses food, I recommend getting him to the vet as soon as possible.

The passing of bowel motions is positive, as is the fact she is willing to drink water. If she begins vomiting, especially empty retching you will need to source emergency care for her but otherwise report to your regular vet in the morning. A probiotic supplement will help restore gut balance once the over indulgence has passed
