My dog ate a twist tie and keeps vomiting. Is a vet visit needed?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 9 months old | 17.6 lbs

Yesterday in the afternoon my dog vomited one of those aluminum ropes that are used to tie and close up those plastic bags with conserved bread. I was really concerned because after vomiting that, she vomited two more times(but the last time it was just a yellowish foam). However, in the evening I gave her some boiled white chicken meat and it was okay until today. I gave her for lunch her conserved meat for dogs and she threw up again after one hour ca. Should I bring her to a local vet?

I would recommend taking her to the vet. I wouldn’t expect ongoing vomiting from ingesting a twist tie, and it’s possible that she ate something else that is causing an obstruction. There are many other diseases that cause vomiting in dogs and after examining Pixie your vet might either recommend some tests like an x-ray or symptomatic treatment.

Hello. There really is nothing much you can do for her until your appointment. If she feels like eating, I would continue to do so unless she vomits shortly afterwards. I would fast her about 12 hours prior to her veterinary appointment, but it is important to keep her eating a little. If it is several days before your appointment & she continues to eat, carry on, but if she refuses to eat or continues to vomit, you may have to have her seen on emergency. Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is always amazing what animals will eat and then pass with no issue. The small twist ties probably won't cause an issue but, they could cause an obstruction of they became bound up with other things or they could pierce the GI tract causing a perforation and infection, it is also possible that they may not pass. It would be best to take him to your family veterinarian where they may take some x-rays to see if the ties are still there. You should also check his feces for the items to ensure they pass through. Of course if he is acting ill at all, he should be seen by a veterinarian ASAP.

My dog ate a towel and is vomiting. Should I take her to the vet?

She could have an intestinal obstruction or possibly just an upset stomach. She should be examined by a vet to determine if she has an obstruction and your vet can take an abdominal x-ray to evaluate. She would need surgery to remove the towel, if an obstruction is found. If your vet does not see evidence of an obstruction than he/she can prescribe medications to help treat the vomiting.

My dog ate a bread twist tie. What should I do? Is it serious?

You can wait to see if it passes. Dogs eat and pass strange things. If you are going to wait, I recommend feeding him a high bulk diet by either adding canned pumpkin or green beans to his food. Or you can get high fiber prescription food from your vet. These help to 'push' things through. If you notice Kiro vomiting, lethargic, or refusing to eat, I recommend taking him to see your veterinarian as soon as possible.

My dog threw up plastic pieces and a hairball. Does she need a vet?

There is always the possibility that there is more frisbee in her stomach and/or intestinal tract. Toys such as these do have the potential for causing an intestinal obstruction. I would not take her into a vet now, but monitor her for the next 72 hours. If she continues to vomit, stops eating, starts having diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts throwing up water, or becomes very lethargic, those are signs of obstruction, and then I would take her into a vet right away.

My dog has pancreatitis and is vomiting. Should I see a vet?

If Pixi is being treated for pancreatitis, this vomiting could still be related to it. Pancreatitis makes a dog very sick. I think she needs to see a vet immediately, as she sounds very sick. Please take her into a vet now. Best of luck.

My dog swallowed a hair tie. Is it safe to make him vomit at home?

No, I would not induce vomiting in Kiba. I never recommend owners do that because hydrogen peroxide (which is used to induce vomiting) can and does cause severe gastritis and esophagitis, often worse than the original problem. In addition, it can lead to aspiration, and the owner will not have the medical knowledge or equipment to treat that at home. A hair tie that small made of fabric will likely pass on it's own, but if you wanted to be safe, you can take Kiba into a vet now who can induce vomiting with a shot.

My dog puked up string and carpet. Is a vet visit necessary?

Thank you for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Keep a very close eye on Lilah. If she vomits again, has any difficulty pooping (acting constipated) is lethargic, not eating or otherwise acts sick at all, then she needs to go to the vet asap. If she is 100% normal after this, then she may have vomited all the fibers that she ate. Be sure to watch what she is chewing on, puppies get into everything. Good luck, I hope this helps.
