My Chihuahua puppy ate a lot of tuna. Is mercury poisoning a risk?

Hello, and thanks for your question about Kitty. Tuna is generally a pretty safe thing for a dog to eat, and I think chances are Kitty will be fine. However, any time a dog gets into something they're not used to, or a fattier than usual meal, it's possible that it could trigger some GI upset. As long as Kitty remains bright and playful with a normal appetite, then she should do just fine and the minimal stool production doesn't worry me. However, if her appetite drops, she seems lethargic, or starts vomiting then I'd have her looked at by the vet in case she is developing pancreatitis. Hope this helps!

The tuna itself isn't harmful, so I suspect he vomited mostly because it was an unfamiliar food for him that may have been too rich or salty. Keep an eye on him for any signs of increasing illness, diarrhea, more vomiting, lethargy, refusal to eat his evening meal, anything like that means he needs to be seen by your vet right away.

Oh dear! This is definitely concerning, since Merthiolate is a mercury-based compound that can be quite toxic if ingested - mercury poisoning can be a serious issue in dogs, just like humans. Poor Jax! Feed him a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If he refuses to eat the bland diet, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away. I'm very concerned that Sony could become markedly hypotensive (very low blood pressure) after taking these pills. Given that he is a chihuahua, the mg/kg dose that he ingested is most likely a VERY large overdose and could be fatal. I recommend attempting to make him vomit as soon as possible by administering hydrogen peroxide to him orally. You may give him a teaspoon (you may have to use a turkey baster to help get it in his mouth) to try to make him vomit. If he does not vomit after 10 minutes, you may try giving him another teaspoon. Ultimately if this is unsuccessful, I recommend bringing him to your nearest emergency veterinarian as soon as possible. That way, a veterinarian can use medication that is injectable to induce vomiting. He/she can also administer medications to try to reduce absorption of this medication and prevent it from having its dangerous effects. Again, I am very concerned about Sony. I hope this is helpful.

I would not be overly worried about this. The small amount of nutmeg used in recipes is very unlikely to cause serious toxicity, though mild stomach upset could occur if a small amount is ingested.
