My dog ate tree food and is not eating. Is it toxic? What to do?

Since he is uncomfortable and unwilling to eat, I think it would be a good idea to get him seen as soon as possible. Oils from fir trees can irritate the inside of their mouths, causing drooling and vomiting and ingested pine needles can collect together creating an intestinal obstruction or potentially puncture the intestine, leading to a painful condition called peritonitis. I feel it would be best to get him seen in case he gets worse or perhaps ate something else you weren't aware of. As you probably know, cats cannot go for long without eating before developing hepatic lipidosis, or fatty liver disease. Your vet will do an exam, possibly x-rays and labwork, and based on these results, will be better able to tell you what is wrong and how best to treat it.

The good news is that the tree is only mildly toxic Mowgli, but the needles will be an irritant to his stomach and GI tract. That would be causing the vomiting. I would try a home remedy to see if that helps with the vomiting. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in his normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, he vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, he will need to see a vet right away.

What a lovely pup! It sounds like Bud has quite an upset stomach, he may have eaten something that hasn't agreed with him or been off. In that case he should be okay and if you starve him for 24 hours then feed bland rice and chicken for a few days his stomach should settle. However, it could be something more serious, if Bud seems dull or lethargic or starts vomiting I would urge you to take him to the vet. More serious conditions would be poisoning or an obstruction. Go to the vet immediately if his stomach looks bloated. Finally, if his brother has died recently there is a chance Bud could have an underlying condition from birth, hopefully not though. Keep a really close eye on him and if he seems really sick or dull please go to the vet.

It can cause gastro-intestinal upset, labored breathing, eye discharge and sometimes neurologic problems. The most common signs are stomach upset: vomiting, diarrhea, not eating. I am hoping that Buddy's symptoms are mild. If he is eating and has stopped vomiting I would feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day for 3-5 days. If he won't eat or is still vomiting he should see a Vet today for supportive care. I hope this helps and I wish Buddy the best!

Oh dear! Young dogs often do things like this, unfortunately. This may pass through uneventfully, or it may become stuck in the intestines and cause an obstruction. It depends a bit on whether he chewed it up first vs. swallowing it whole, and on how large the piece was that he ate. You will need to monitor him closely for the next few days for any signs of a problem. Symptoms of an intestinal obstruction would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, not wanting to eat, and not having bowel movements. If you see any of these signs, you will need to take Jim to the vet right away for an exam and x-rays, since he may need emergency surgery to remove the blockage.

Pine needles and bark are not toxic, but the needles contain some oil that can cause irritation to the the stomach. You may see a decreased appetite, nausea, vomiting, or diarrhea. If these occur for longer than 24 hours, Luna should see a vet for treatment. If she eats a large amount of bark and/or pine needles, it could cause more severe damage internally and potentially cause painful constipation. If she seems in distress when trying to have a bowel movement, she should see a vet for treatment. I would try to prevent her from eating this. You can try to fence off the shrub, take Luna out on a leash, or remove the shrub. It is possible that she will outgrow it, but this breed tends to get themselves into trouble by eating inappropriate things for several years!

Poor guy. Tea tree oil is a pretty nasty irritant to the stomach when ingested. You can try giving him a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese for a few days, along with 1-2 tsp's of canned pumpkin (not the pie filling). I would also give him some non-flavored Pedialyte diluted with water to help prevent dehydration. If he is still having a hard time after another 24 hrs, then it is best to take him to your vet for stronger medication to help stop the nausea and treat his diarrhea with antibiotics.
