My dog ate teriyaki chicken and vomited. When should I worry?

At worst, you may see some stomach upset (vomiting, diarrhea). If so, withhold food for 24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet in small, frequent amounts. Begin with 1 tablespoon of food every hour and gradually increase the amount if there is no vomiting. Feed bland until symptoms resolve then transition slowly to the regular diet. Symptoms that should be addressed by your vet include persistent vomiting or diarrhea, lethargy, loss of appetite or abdominal pain.

Regardless of eating the sock or not, he is still vomiting, so I would recommend taking him to a vet right away. He is young and a lot of vomiting can cause dehydration that puppies cannot recover from on their own. The vet may want to check for intestinal parasites and parvo virus (common causes of vomiting in puppies) and may also take an x-ray to look for a foreign object in the intestinal tract. If no cause for vomiting is found, the doctor can treat the vomiting and replace the fluids Shiro has lost so he doesn't get sicker. I am sorry to hear about Roxie! It sounds like perhaps the spicy jerky didn't agree with her stomach! I see your question is from 13 hours ago. If Roxie is still vomiting, then I would take her in to your vet. In the future, if she starts vomiting then it is recommended to remove food and water so she takes in nothing orally for 6 to 8 hours. If she continues to vomit despite taking nothing in, time to head to the vet. If she stops vomiting then you can slowly reintroduce small amounts of water at first, then bland food like cooked white rice and boiled shredded chicken breast in small amounts. If vomiting restarts, then she needs to see the vet. If at any point she seemed painful, very lethargic, or vomits blood then these would also be reasons to seek veterinary care ASAP.

Rockie is adorable and I'm sorry to hear that he isn't feeling well. After eating a heavy, greasy meal, he may have developed gastroenteritis (inflammation in his stomach and intestines) or pancreatitis. Aside from assuring that he is drinking water and offering a bit of a bland diet (boiled white meat chicken and rice) as you have done, there isn't anything more that can be done at home. Young puppies are more susceptible to the effects of dehydration than adult dogs and need to be treated a bit more urgently. At this point, Rockie needs to take a trip to the vet for an exam, diagnostic testing and supportive care (IV fluids and medications). I hope that he is feeling better soon!

As a first approach, considering these episodes may be self limiting, I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8-12 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It could be due to dietary indiscretion or even more concerning due to a gastrointestinal obstruction. The fact that Bailey ate dinner and did not vomit makes me think that it is less likely for this to be an obstruction though if the vomiting resumes or he stops eating, he should be evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. I'm sorry to hear that Rocket got into some chicken bones - sounds like he will need the trash can locked away from him from now on. While most chicken bones can be digested by the stomach acid, some larger pieces may start migrating through the intestines before the stomach has had a chance to fully break them down. This makes sense with how you are already seeing pieces in his stool. Since he is vomiting and having diarrhea, he is likely experiencing some significant gastroenteritis, or inflammation/irritation of the GI tract. This is most often self-limiting, and should resolve on its own with a few days of a bland diet. I recommend feeding Rocket a diet of boiled rice and boiled chicken (no bones!) in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 2-3 days. If Rocket continues to vomit, or the diarrhea becomes bloody, I recommend having him seen a by veterinarian. A big concern would be that one of the bones has become lodged in his intestines, causing a blockage. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Rocket!
