My dog mouthed spoiled meat. Is botulism a worry if she swallowed it?

Oh that's not good! I'd just watch Zoe for now. This meat could make her sick and give her symptoms such as vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, and lethargy. If you see any of those signs, have her seen by a vet. I don't think she can handle eating meat that's been sitting outside for a month, that's pretty rotten, but you never know!

Hello. Please do not worry about such a small piece. Dogs seem to be able to tolerate things much better than we can, primarily because their digestive tract is much shorter than ours. Bad stuff passes through usually fast enough that no problems will occur. Botulism is found in the soil & very, very rarely affects dogs. It is definitely suspicious that something is hurting her mouth and causing her to not want to eat, but this would not normally cause her to vomit. The bile staining in the vomit doesn't tell much other than she is vomiting on an empty stomach. This is not specific to any one disease, but indicates that something is either directly upsetting her stomach, or generally making her feel nauseous. It would be best to first have a good look on her mouth using a flash light to see if there are any obvious injuries or something stuck in her mouth. I recommend having someone help you with this. In order to discover the cause of this problem you will need to take Zoey to a veterinarian for an evaluation. They can help narrow-down the cause of this and provide treatment to at-least make her feel better. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Zelda may not get sick from the pork. If the meat wasn't rancid or spoiled then she could digest it with out any issue. Raw pork can contain food born pathogens like toxoplasma, but signs of that may not develop for months. There is nothing you can do for that in the short term. If she just ate it you could contact your Vet to discuss inducing vomiting to remove the raw pork. We are unable to provide instructions on inducing vomiting. Otherwise I would just watch her. If she shows signs of vomiting or diarrhea I would fast her for 12-24 hours and feed a bland diet of boiled chicken breast or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs per day until 2 normal stools. I wish you the best!

As long as none was ingested, it will likely not cause any problems. If you would rather be on the safe side, you can bring shelbi in to see your vet and have her blood tested to make sure that there are no changes consistent with rat poison. I hope this helps!
