My dog ate a sanitary napkin. Is she okay, or should I watch her?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 11 months and 6 days old | 8.4 lbs

Rubie chewed up a sanitary napkin yesterday morning she has not vomited and was eating treats and ate her food just fine she's peeing and drinking great no diarrhea,she's in heat though not sure if that matters but anyways shes been acting normal play,barking eyes are clear and bright,today at 7:15 am she pooped it was solid not runny and normal color no signs of blood or tarry stool so can I assume she's ok and there is no abdominal or anal obstruction or should I still watch her closely?

It can take a few days for a foreign object to fully move through the gastrointestinal tract. I've also seen a dog or two that has had a foreign object that can stay in the stomach for a long time (months) and that causes intermittent problems - this would be pretty unusual for something like a sanitary napkin however. I'd say if you get to three days with no problems you're probably in the clear. It sounds like you know what signs to watch for already but if she does vomit, if her appetite is decreased or if you see diarrhea you should head to your vet.

There is always a chance for an intestinal obstruction to occur within the first 2-12hrs of ingesting a foreign body, so continue to monitor her for this time frame for any signs of trouble which include: excessive vomiting ( even water), lack of appetite, abdominal pain and severe lethargy. However things are looking good so far, especially since she has eaten and kept it down.

My pregnant dog ate sanitary pads from the trash. Is she okay?

Hello. I am sorry for your concerns about Kimber. There is always the risk of a blockage from the material ingested, but at this point in time, all you can do is be watchful. As long as she is eating well ( & heavily pregnant dogs often do not eat very well ), there is no vomiting, & her bowel movements stay regular over the next 36-48 hours, then she was able to pass the pads. Anything unusual, please contact your veterinarian as soon as possible. Thank you.

This can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. The symptoms of gastrointestinal blockage include vomiting, lack of appetite, abdominal pain, small stools or no stools at all. If Sassy ate the incontinence pad a few days ago and she has not developed signs of anorexia and vomiting, most likely she does not have a blockage. If the only worrying sign at the moment is abnormal stool appearance, you should try bland diet for 2-3 days. However, if Sassy looks unwell or starts to vomit, you should take her to your local vets right away.

Some dogs can pass the oddest and largest items you would never imagine, others have a harder time. All you can do is monitor for any vomiting or blood diarrhea. The ones that seem to pass these have no symptoms at all and you may or may not even see them pass it out. I would continue to watch Midnight. If she ate part of a bedsheet that gets stuck in her small intestine, dogs will often be lethargic, have a decreased appetite, belly pain, or vomiting. Sometimes things like a sheet will move slowly through the intestines, and it could take 3-5 days to come out. If the dog is feeling ill, then often IV fluids and enemas can help it pass a little faster. If the dog is very ill, then surgery would be needed to remove the obstruction.
