Oh no, that's not good that Heart ate a ham bone! Unfortunately there's not much you can do but watch her. It's not recommended to induce vomiting as the bone could get caught in her esophagus on the way out and/or cause damage to the esophagus. You can try giving her a slice of whole wheat bread now and one with every meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract. Keep an eye out for vomiting, anorexia, blood in the feces, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you see any of those signs, it could be the bone is stuck in her GI tract and/or causing damage to it, and she needs to see a vet for it immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

Oh no, that was naughty of Sadie to eat the cooked pork chop bone off the counter! Yes, you can give her some bread which will cushion the sharp bites, and while inducing vomiting is not typically recommended, you could take her into an ER vet now to see if they can remove the bone with an endoscope to prevent any chance of obstruction or perforation. Your other option is to monitor her and hope that it passes without problem. Give her a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal so that it will hopefully form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract. While monitoring her, watch her for signs of vomiting, anorexia, lethargy, diarrhea, bloody feces, or blood in the vomit. Should you see any of those signs, rush Sadie into a vet immediately. If it happened in the past hour I would recommend heading to an emergency vet - they can potentially take an x-ray and determine whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt to induce vomiting. If the bone was sharp or very large there are risks to inducing vomiting so it may not be worthwhile. Unfortunately I find that pork bones in particular can cause obstructions or constipation. If the vet decides there is too much risk to inducing vomiting they may prescribe some medications to help protect the stomach or a diet change while monitoring closely for any vomiting, decrease in appetite, or difficulty defecating.

Ham is safe. At most it would cause an upset stomach, which could cause vomiting and/or diarrhea, but nothing serious. It's unlikely that buster will have any issues due to this, so no need to do anything drastic. It must have been a great Thanksgiving snack for him though. I hope that helps and happy Thanksgiving!

My dog eats ham bones. Is it safe for him to eat the entire bone?

As with any bone or hard chew toy, there are concerns for tooth trauma. In my experience, I've seen many broken teeth from dogs chewing on deer antlers, hard bones, etc. I would usually recommend against giving these for that reason. As Rocky is a larger breed dog, the pieces of bone that he is chewing off of the main bone should not be a problem and they should pass through his intestines just fine. However, if given a large enough bone and he eats it whole, this could lead to a GI foreign body obstruction as the bone tries to pass through and gets stuck. There are alternatives you can use such as Kong toys that you can put treats in or put peanut butter in that would keep him busy. Hopefully this helps! No you don’t need to take him to the vet right now. If he start acting lethargic, stops eating, or starts vomiting or having diarrhea, then yes I would take him to your vet then. Your vet will be able to get him started on something to help settle his tummy and make him feel better. I agree that ham isn’t the best thing to feed them, but some dogs will eat a little bit and not have a problem. Just watch him closely. I hope this helps!

Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. You can give him a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal to form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract.

Dog vomited after eating fresh bone. Is raw bone safe for dogs?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Eli! The fresh bone may be causing an upset tummy or even a blockage if a large piece was broken off. Also raw meat and bone can contain bacteria that can cause vomiting or diarrhea (like food poisoning). I would resume feeding the mutton and bone as previous, cooked. In the mean time stop the fresh mutton and feed her a bland diet of rice with boiled chicken or hamburger as small frequent meal for 3-5 days. Then resume her old diet. If she refuses to eat or continues to vomit then she should be seen by your Vet. Have a great day!
