My dog ate a cooked pork shoulder bone. What should I do now?

Dogs will be dogs! As a veterinarian, I always recommend to my clients not to allow their pets to consume any cooked bones. As you have already intimated, these tend to break up into shards or splinters, leading to potentially disastrous consequences. It certainly sounds like the pork Sargent consumed is not agreeing with him in one way or another. Two episodes of vomiting by itself is not terribly many. However, if you note continuing vomiting throughout the next few hours, I would absolutely recommend seeking medical attention. In addition to a bone splintering and causing physical damage to the GI tract, theses types of foods have also been known to cause pancreatitis. The clinical signs of this condition will include lethargy, vomiting, and unwillingness to eat. Another thing to look out for over the course of the next several hours will be any blood in the feces. A small amount of blood in the feces is not very concerning, but any amounts of pooling red blood is a definite cause of immediate concern. If you do choose to take your dog to the vet, it is highly likely they will want to take some x-rays to see if it appears the bones are passing through the GI tract. They are also able to run blood work to determine if pancreatitis may be brewing. Should they determine things are looking OK, your vet may want to administer some medications to help calm the gastrointestinal system and prevent further vomiting.

Oh no, that's not good. This may cause some problems, but do not induce vomiting. I would keep a close eye on Snickers for the next couple of days. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, blood in his poop, lethargy, excessive drooling, or a loss of appetite, have him seen by a vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Oh no, that's not good that Heart ate a ham bone! Unfortunately there's not much you can do but watch her. It's not recommended to induce vomiting as the bone could get caught in her esophagus on the way out and/or cause damage to the esophagus. You can try giving her a slice of whole wheat bread now and one with every meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract. Keep an eye out for vomiting, anorexia, blood in the feces, diarrhea, and lethargy. If you see any of those signs, it could be the bone is stuck in her GI tract and/or causing damage to it, and she needs to see a vet for it immediately. Best of luck, I hope this helps!

This is an emergency at this point. My best guess is that he either has an intestinal obstruction or pancreatitis. Regardless, he needs to be seen by a vet. This can be extremely serious so please get him examined right away. Both are life-threatening.

If you have an emergency vet available in your area, I would strongly recommend getting him seen right away. Keep him warm, keep him hydrated by offering low sodium chicken broth, ice cubes to lick and get him seen the second you can. And make sure to submit the vet bill to whoever fed him bones and people food. It may not do any good, but it may make them more aware of the consequences of feeding pets something they shouldn't have.

Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. I would not recommend making Cooper vomit. IF he continues to vomit I would recommend taking him to the vet as soon as possible for a possible obstruction. I would monitor him closely for eating, drinking and defecation. If he is not defecation or having diarrhea I would recommend taking him to a vet. These large bones can cause a blockage or severe gastric upset. Hope that helps
