My dog ate a ham bone and has diarrhea. When should I call the vet?

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Large (61lb +) | Female | spayed | 61 lbs

Dog ate a ham bone one day ago. She has eaten a bit, drank a bunch of water and has pooped 3 times since. Twice it was somewhat solid tan poop and once was tan diarrhea. Should I be worried and go to a vet or will she be ok ?

If there is no blood in the diarrhea and as long as Fate is eating and drinking normally with no vomiting it is probably okay to monitor her. Ham bones can cause bloody diarrhea, constipation or intestinal obstruction so if you see her straining to defecate or you see the signs above you should see a vet right away. If she doesn’t have any dietary restrictions you could try feeding a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken and 75% plain white rice for the next couple of days to help with the diarrhea.

The stomach is pretty good about digesting bones, but there is certainly a possibility that if it was a thick knuckle that it could cause an obstruction. More commonly it can cause irritation to the intestinal tract, and possibly even pancreatitis. I would offer very small amounts of a bland diet today, such as boiled chicken and rice. If she won’t eat or if she continues to vomit then she should be seen by a veterinarian as soon as possible. They will likely recommend an x-ray and blood work to help determine the diagnosis and be able to offer the best treatment options. Best of luck and I hope she improves soon. I would recommend taking Halo to a veterinarian. The ham bone can upset Halo's stomach but can also cause obstruction or perforate the intestines if it is pointy enough.

At the veterinarian they will most likely perform X-rays to see exactly what is left in Halo's stomach. Depending on what the x-rays state they may recommend symptomatic outpatient care (fluids, medications to stop the vomiting and bland diet) or they may recommend hospitalization and in patient care. If the ham bone became obstructed in Halo's intestines they may recommend surgery.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! If all he has is colitis from getting into the trash, a visit to your veterinarian would be recommended. Mainly because they can prescribe a medication for diarrhea which will likely help significantly. I am afraid that he is becoming dehydrated and for that reason I recommend that you have him evaluated sooner rather than later. If your veterinarian is closed because of the holidays, you can consider taking him to your local emergency clinic. Good luck!

I'd have Rory seen by a vet today. This ham bone could be causing an obstruction leading to the diarrhea, and if he does have an obstruction, that will have to be removed surgically. Please take him into a vet now to get checked out. Best of luck.

My dog ate bones and has bloody diarrhea. What are the next steps?

Since you're seeing bloody stool or bloody [diarrhea](https://www.petcoach.co/dog/condition/diarrhea-1/), I recommend getting her in to see your vet as soon as possible. One of the sharp bone ends may have caused irritation or internal injury. Bright, red blood may indicate injury in the colon or lower intestine while dark, tarry stool may indicate bleeding in the stomach or upper intestine. If she is not passing the bones she needs to be seen right away. However, if she is behaving normally otherwise, you may be able to[ manage the bloody diarrhea at home](https://www.petcoach.co/article/6-things-you-can-do-at-home-if-your-pet-has-diarrhea). Help 'pad' the bones passing through by offering bulky meals for a few days and even consider adding some unflavored Metamucil to wet food for her. My dog ate a bone, had diarrhea, normal, no poop. Should I worry?

Bones can dissolve in the stomach with enough time. It sounds like Kyro had a bout of pancreatitis that caused the vomiting and diarrhea. If Kyro is now acting normal, I would continue to feed the bland diet and see what happens. It may take a day or two for there to be enough food ingested to create solid poop. If he stops eating, starts vomiting again, or seems lethargic, he should be re-examined by a vet.

My dog ate rib bones and has diarrhea. When should I see a vet?

Poor Devious! Many dogs will have an upset stomach after eating something like this. The biggest concern is that the rib bones can have sharp edges and may cause an intestinal perforation, or they could become stuck and cause a blockage in her intestines. Signs of these problems would include repeated episodes of vomiting, acting lethargic, and not wanting to eat - if she develops any of these symptoms, she needs to see a vet immediately as she may need emergency surgery to remove the bones. If she is acting normal right now apart from some runny stool, you can try feeding her a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice for the next 2-3 days to help settle her stomach and get things back to normal. If this doesn't help, or if she develops any other symptoms such as the ones I listed above, you will need to take her to the vet right away for an exam and treatment.

You can change his food to boiled chicken and rice as this is very bland. You can also get probiotics from any pet store to start. If he starts vomiting or has a decrease in appetite, or starts with bloody diarrhea, then he needs to be seen by your vet. My dog ate chicken bones, now has diarrhea and vomiting. What to do?

Keep an eye on Dobby. As long as he's keeping his food down, keep feeding him and offering him plenty of water. Give him half a slice of whole wheat bread with each meal. This may form a ball of ingesta around the bones, and cushion them as they pass through the GI tract. If he continues vomiting, there is blood in his vomit or feces, he becomes lethargic, and/or he stops eating, he needs to see a vet immediately. In that case, find an ER vet or a vet on call. My dog ate cooked rib bones. What should I do for her diarrhea?

There is nothing else I'd recommend for treating diarrhea at home. If the diarrhea continues for more than 3 days, if you see blood, if Sunni seems to be straining when defecating without producing much stool, or if she vomits or has a decrease in appetite I'd recommend seeing a veterinarian. Rib bones often cause constipation, but sometimes a dog can pass small amounts of watery stool while constipated so watch closely for straining.
