My dog ate rabbit poop. Should I worry about sickness or giardia?

Yes, if your dog has a sensitive GI tract. Dogs won't typically get infected with rabbit parasites. They are usually species specific. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If the diarrhea does not resolve, see your veterinarian. Submit a stool sample to rule out other intestinal parasites. Try to restrict your dog's access to rabbit stool.

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don't think you have much to worry about with the rabbit poop. I would just monitor Steeler's stools and continue to deworm as advised by your veterinarian. Puppies need to be dewormed at least 3-4 times in my opinion. This is done every 3 weeks. Usually, we use pyrantel pamoate for this which kills the roundworms and hookworms that the puppy got in utero and while nursing the mother. Once heartworm prevention is started, most of those contain a dewormer so that can count as a regular deworming for puppies also. Eating grass and leaves is another thing that puppies and dogs like to do. Usually, this doesn't cause a problem. Sometimes they vomit sometimes they don't. What would concern me is if the lawn has been treated with any chemicals. I would advise no chemical use on the lawn where the puppy has access to. This mainly concerns the use of weed killers that many people use on their lawns. Leaves may upset their stomach but again I would be careful since some plant leaves can be toxic to pets. Research what is in your yard and make changes if you have to. Good luck

Hello. If your toilet was relatively clean, there is nothing to worry about as the water that goes to the toilet is the same that comes from the main line into the house for drinking. If your toilet is less than pristine, then thee is a small possibility of a bacterial infection. Forget about giardia, this is a parasite that is found in streams & bodies of water contaminated by wildlife feces. In the small chance that there was enough bacteria in the toilet water to cause an illness, you should watch for vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, loss of appetite, bloating or signs of abdominal pain. Most signs should show in the next 48-72 hours, so if Bentley makes it through the weekend with no problems, he will be perfectly fine. While eating deer and goose feces is gross it is probably not going to cause any illness. Most parasites are specific to the host. I suppose Giardia could potentially be transmitted in either deer or goose feces but I think it would be unlikely. His diet sounds balanced as long as the raw food is a commercially available balanced diet or comprises <10% of his total calories. The only way I know to get him to stop would be to restrict access - for some reason dogs seem to find the feces of most other species irresistible.

I'd be concerned that the color of Ripley's diarrhea is due to blood, but given she ate some rabbit food, this could be irritating her GI tract. I can give you a home remedy to see if that helps. Withhold food for 6 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, you continue to see blood in her feces, she starts vomiting food, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. For that reason, I would highly recommend you have Cash evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check on this and treat him appropriately. If an obstruction is confirmed, surgery may be needed. It could also be something less serious such as gastrointestinal upset though it is still a good idea to confirm that. Best of luck!

There is really nothing you need to do for this. There are a couple of diseases that can be transmitted from rabbits to dogs, but it would be very rare from this exposure. Without knowing if this rabbit had an infectious disease, we would not give any medication prophylactcally (in anticipation of a disease). If the dogs ate any of the meat, then there is a chance of them getting parasites, but this is easily treated with regular deworming. You can deworm them in a month to be safe. Otherwise, there's little need to worry. Dogs are quite tolerant of eating wild animals. If they happen to have signs of illness in the next two weeks, then it will be helpful to notify the vet of the rabbit exposure I hope that helps.
