My puppy has red diarrhea after eating rabbit food. Should I worry?

Yes, if your dog has a sensitive GI tract. Dogs won't typically get infected with rabbit parasites. They are usually species specific. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If the diarrhea does not resolve, see your veterinarian. Submit a stool sample to rule out other intestinal parasites. Try to restrict your dog's access to rabbit stool.

For that reason, I would highly recommend you have Cash evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check on this and treat him appropriately. If an obstruction is confirmed, surgery may be needed. It could also be something less serious such as gastrointestinal upset though it is still a good idea to confirm that. Best of luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Raegan! Having diarrhea secondary to eating a different brand of food is common. I don't think it has to do with the brand but more with Raegan being more sensitive to abrupt food changed than other dogs. The blood commonly occurs with severe diarrhea, it indicated inflammation in the colon. When blood appears in the stool I think it is best to have the pet seen and antibiotics started (metronidazole). Other causes of diarrhea are: intestinal parasites, viral or bacterial infections, dietary indiscretion, pancreatitis, toxin ingestion and the obvious food intolerance. I feel it is best to have her seen before the weekend but if you can't get her in then I recommend fasting her for 12-24 hours to rest the GI tract then restart feeding with a bland diet. Boil chicken or hamburger and mix with rice. Feed 1 cup per 20 lbs and feed the diet until 2 normal stools then slowly transition her back to her dry food. It is possible it is the raw food diet diet causing Charley's bloody diarrhea. That's because raw meat carries bacteria that can make your dog sick. It could also be due to intestinal parasites, so make sure she is up to date on her deworming treatments. Then slowly add back in a commercial dry dog food for her. I would recommend feeding the commercial day dog food diet to her because there is no risk of poisoning from bacteria, either to her or you. If Charley isn't fully vaccinated, there is a chance she could have parvovirus, but given that she is happy and energetic, it's more likely related to her diet. If she does become very lethargic or the bland diet doesn't help the diarrhea, I would take her into the vet.
