My dog eats deer and goose poop. Is it dangerous? How to stop him?

Keeping Beast away from the cow poop is a good first step to stopping him from eating it. If he isn't being monitored he should be kept out of areas where it is available. If you're with him and he starts to eat it, calling him off and distracting him with another job to do or a treat or appropriate chew instead is best. As cow poop can carry bacteria and parasites, it is a good idea to make sure Beast gets regular fecal exams done to watch for any potential infections.

There is not way to get him to stop except to restrict his access to those areas. This does have potential to spread bacterial and intestinal parasite infections so I would make sure he is on a regular dewormer (most heartworm preventions already include this) and monitor for any vomiting or diarrhea.

It should not be dangerous for Travis but it may upset his tummy badly. Go ahead and feed him a bland diet of boiled chicken and white rice for the next 24 hours. If he develops severe diarrhea or vomiting, take him to the vet. Best of luck!

Many puppies eat the poop of other animals when they get a chance - it's a gross habit, but very normal for dogs. In most cases, it won't cause any serious problems but you should be cautious if the pigs have been dewormed recently as many livestock dewormers are toxic to dogs and may still be present in the feces. I would recommend teaching your dog a reliable "leave it!" command using rewards (a trainer in your area should be able to help with this), and keeping him on-leash in any areas where pig feces are present in the meantime so that you can prevent him from having access to them.

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Frederich's problems. There is a slight chance of course that the giardia organism may be present in the feces as it is though to be part of the normal gut flora of the rabbits, but that species of giardia usually doesn't effect dogs. Dogs can get tapeworms if they eat the entire rabbit. However, like giardia, most of the parasites the rabbits carry are species specific to them. I would just watch Frederich for any gastrointestinal upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea as rabbit poop is not a normal part of his diet (or so we hope but who knows if hes sneaking some behind your back ;) ) and it may give him a bellyache. As gross as it is, some dogs do decide they enjoy the taste of poop. It sounds like Ziggy is on a balanced diet so I think you're correct in that he's not likely missing out on nutrients. Because of some health concerns and because this is obviously not desirable behavioral you can try to stop Ziggy from eating poop a few different ways. Sometimes feeding some pineapple juice can change the taste of feces so a dog will stop eating it. There is also a product called For-bid that can help stop this behavioral. Finally, trying to be diligent about feces removal from the yard may be necessary to stop Ziggy. Please monitor Ziggy for signs of weight loss, vomiting or diarrhea has rarely, even pets on a balanced diet can have a digestive issue that could cause this behavior. Also by ingested feces Ziggy is at increased risk for picking up GI parasites. I hope this helps!

This is such a common question for a gross, but unfortunately common, issue. Unfortunately, there isn't a great way to get them to stop. Adding excessive MSG (food seasoning) can make some dogs stop because their stool no longer tastes good (such as "For-Bid"). However, we don't know if there are negative effects for our dogs eating a lot of MSG. Trying to walk him for his bowl movement so you can pick up the stool right away is another way to manage it - you may need to have a treat ready to give him right away after he defects so that you have a moment to get to the stool.
