My dog ate rabbit poop, leaves, and grass. Is this harmful to him?

Pet's info: Dog | Goldendoodle | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 3 days old | 8 lbs

I noticed little pellets in the yard that I think are rabbit poop. My dog may have ate one. Is this harmful? Also it seems like the dog likes to eat leaves and grass. Is this harmful?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I don't think you have much to worry about with the rabbit poop. I would just monitor Steeler's stools and continue to deworm as advised by your veterinarian. Puppies need to be dewormed at least 3-4 times in my opinion. This is done every 3 weeks. Usually, we use pyrantel pamoate for this which kills the roundworms and hookworms that the puppy got in utero and while nursing the mother. Once heartworm prevention is started, most of those contain a dewormer so that can count as a regular deworming for puppies also. Eating grass and leaves is another thing that puppies and dogs like to do. Usually, this doesn't cause a problem. Sometimes they vomit sometimes they don't. What would concern me is if the lawn has been treated with any chemicals. I would advise no chemical use on the lawn where the puppy has access to. This mainly concerns the use of weed killers that many people use on their lawns. Leaves may upset their stomach but again I would be careful since some plant leaves can be toxic to pets. Research what is in your yard and make changes if you have to. Good luck

A small amount of dirt and leaves probably won't hurt him much although he can pick up parasites, so I would recommend deworming him on a regular basis. It may also cause him to vomit or have diarrhea. I would worry if he eats rocks or sticks as these can cause a blockage in his stomach or intestines that will require surgery. You can monitor him closely when outside and try to deter him from eating these things by giving him an appropriate chew toy.

Hi there! I'm so sorry to hear about Frederich's problems. There is a slight chance of course that the giardia organism may be present in the feces as it is though to be part of the normal gut flora of the rabbits, but that species of giardia usually doesn't effect dogs. Dogs can get tapeworms if they eat the entire rabbit. However, like giardia, most of the parasites the rabbits carry are species specific to them. I would just watch Frederich for any gastrointestinal upset like vomiting and/or diarrhea as rabbit poop is not a normal part of his diet (or so we hope but who knows if hes sneaking some behind your back ;) ) and it may give him a bellyache. My puppy eats pig poop. Is it harmful and how can I stop it?

Many puppies eat the poop of other animals when they get a chance - it's a gross habit, but very normal for dogs. In most cases, it won't cause any serious problems but you should be cautious if the pigs have been dewormed recently as many livestock dewormers are toxic to dogs and may still be present in the feces. I would recommend teaching your dog a reliable "leave it!" command using rewards (a trainer in your area should be able to help with this), and keeping him on-leash in any areas where pig feces are present in the meantime so that you can prevent him from having access to them.

If this is a behavior that you would like to try and stop, you can try a product called Forbid, which can be found online quite easily. Why is my dog having diarrhea after eating rabbit droppings?

Yes, if your dog has a sensitive GI tract. Dogs won't typically get infected with rabbit parasites. They are usually species specific. Withhold food for 12-24 hours. Allow small amounts of water or unflavored PediaLyte. Resume feeding a bland diet ( boiled boneless / skinless chicken and plain white rice) in small, frequent amounts. Continue feeding until the stool is normal. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. If the diarrhea does not resolve, see your veterinarian. Submit a stool sample to rule out other intestinal parasites. Try to restrict your dog's access to rabbit stool.

Is my puppy pooping in her crate because she eats branches and mulch?

Hi Deja! It is common that puppies eat things outside such as branches and mulch, but it is strongly recommended to keep them from doing that. Branches can cause trauma to the GI tract, and some types of mulch can be toxic to dogs if they contain cocoa beans. Puppies may eat this stuff due to intestinal worms, which would also cause her to poop in her crate. I would make sure Daisy is up to date on her deworming treatments, giving her one if she is not. I recommend Panacur, which is a three day course of treatment. She will need another course of treatment two weeks after the first to kill all the worms, and then she should be dewormed every three months. Pick up any branches outside, and keep her away from the mulch to keep her from eating it.
