My dog ate a peony petal. Are they toxic? What symptoms to watch for?

The toxic components in tulips is concentrated in the bulb but is also present (in less concentrated amounts) in the other parts of the plant as well. I think Rocky will be fine but symptoms you would see would be associated with irritation of the mouth and esophagus: drooling and maybe vomiting. If you didn't do so already, flush out his mouth really well. If vomiting occurs I would have him seen by a vet. I hope this helps and I wish Rocky the best!

Hello! I have great news for you! Daisies are non-toxic to dogs. I doubt you will see anything as a result of him eating the petals, but at most, mild stomach irritation could cause an episode of vomit or two. Oh no, that's not good that Layla ate a petal from a lily! As I'm sure you know, the lily is toxic to dogs and causes GI upset, anorexia, and tremors. Typically a dog has to eat large amounts of it to cause these symptoms, so one petal may not be enough to cause any problems. I would watch Layla for now, and if you do see any GI upset in the form of vomiting or diarrhea, I can give you a home remedy to try. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, the diarrhea continues on the bland diet, she stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. Diarrhea can be observed with conditions such as colitis, gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, intestinal parasites, among many other possibilities. In this case, dietary indiscretion is possible given that petals were ingested. Assuming the petals were not from a toxic flower, you could try a bland diet composed mainly of boiled chicken and white rice which is easily digestible and can help with an upset stomach. If no improvement is noted, I recommend that you have Moose evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They may choose to check for parasites and to start medications for diarrhea depending on the results. There are two types of geranium - the genus Geranium (cranesbill) is not toxic and will not cause any complications. However, garlic and butter both can affect her in different ways, especially by causing gastrointestinal symptoms like the vomiting. If you think she ate a large amount, she should be evaluated right away as that can be a significant toxicity. Also, begonias are very toxic to dogs sometimes resulting in kidney failure so if she ate any, she should be evaluated by a veterinarian as soon as possible. Poinciana plants can be toxic to dogs. It can cause drooling, vomiting, diarrhea, in-coordination, liver, and kidney damage. If your are positive she only ate a small part and it has been two hours without any abnormal signs then she might be fine. The safest thing would be to have her examined by a vet for a physical examination and determine if any treatment is needed. Your vet could run lab-work to evaluate her liver and kidneys and then prescribe medications to treat, if needed.
