My dog ate a sub sandwich with onions and guac. Will he be okay?

Updated on September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

My dog ate a 8” sub sandwich. It had roast beef, turkey, onions, mustard, guac, and cheese on it. He ate it about 20 mins ago and he appears completely fine. I just want to make sure he will be okay.

Hi there. The only ingredient you've listed here that can potentially be toxic to dogs is onion - and for a 40 pound dog, he would need to eat quite a bit to cause any serious problems. I wouldn't expect the amount that would be on a small sub sandwich as a topping to be enough to be a major issue.

It's possible that you may see some mild GI upset (vomiting or diarrhea) over the next 24 hours, especially if Bear isn't used to eating human food like this. But I would not expect to see any serious problems.
