My dog ate marshmallows (no xylitol). What should I do for his upset belly?

Hello. It is possible, depending on how much Mijah ate. All that sugar can cause what we call an osmotic diarrhea by pulling excess water out of the ingesta in the intestines. Most of these diarrheas are self-limiting, so if Mijah feels like eating you can feed a bland diet of 25% boiled chicken & 75% white rice or low fat cottage cheese. Feed small amounts more frequently over the next 2-3 days, & the stool should start to firm up. As long as there is no xylitol, the worst you may see is some minor stomach upset (vomiting or diarrhea). As long as Charlie is behaving normally, you should be fine. Minor stomach upset can typically be managed at home with a short fast followed by a bland diet fed in small, frequent amounts until symptoms resolve. Transition slowly to the regular diet afterwards. Symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian may include: persistent or worsening stomach upset, loss of appetite, abdominal pain or lethargy.

Just keep an eye on Lilly for now. This may at most cause her some GI upset. If you do see some GI upset, I can give you a home remedy for her. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away. She should be fine. Just keep an eye on her and do not induce vomiting. She may have vomiting or diarrhea but probably not. If so she should be better in a day or so. If she should become lethargic or have stomach pain or severe diarrhea then certainly take her in for treatment right away.
