My dog ate a King Size Reese's Cup. How worried should I be?

It can, however, cause gastrointestinal upset or even a more serious condition known as pancreatitis. If she develops vomiting or diarrhea, then she should see her veterinarian. If she is allergic to any of the ingredients, inflamed skin could result. That being said, her skin changes could be the result of something else especially if it has happened before. You can bathe her with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner such as an oatmeal or fatty acid based formula to soothe the skin. If this does not help, then she should see her veterinarian. As I'm sure you know, Reese's contain chocolate and chocolate is toxic to dogs. At 70lbs of body weight, he can eat about 30 average size peanut butter cups without suffering chocolate intoxication; however he may get gastro-intestinal problems such as diarrhea and pancreatitis. Fatty foods can give dogs pancreatitis, which can be life threatening. The best thing to do is take him into the vet to have vomiting induced to get rid of the peanut cups. If you chose not to do this, you need to watch him for vomiting, diarrhea, vomiting undigested food, lethargy, a loss of appetite, and vomiting water. If you see any of those signs, it's an emergency and he will have to see a vet right away. I hope this helps!

What a scary experience! I totally understand being concerned. The chocolate in reeses cups is mostly sugar and milk, so even eating 6 and even being so small, Elliott should be ok. It's still a good idea to keep an eye out for vomiting, diarrhea, agitation, and shaking/tremors. If you see any of those signs, I'd recommend going to a vet for supportive care.

I certainly wouldn't worry about inducing vomiting after just one peanut butter cup. The induction of vomiting poses more risks than the peanut butter cup does! Inducing vomiting at home with hydrogen peroxide comes with the risk of aspiration and significant irritation to the esophagus and stomach. The wrapper will pass without a problem. There isn't enough chocolate in a peanut butter cup to cause any toxicity concerns. Worst case scenario, Jack may develop an upset stomach with a bit of vomiting and diarrhea. If he does, you can offer a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken and white rice for a few days before gradually transitioning back to his normal food. Possible concerns would be an obstruction from the wrappers if he ate those too OR pancreatitis flare up if there is alot of fat in those cakes. Otherwise, I’d monitor for vomiting and diarrhea. I see he's a good sized dog at 55lbs, so chances are eating this cookie is not going to cause him any problems. At most, you may see some GI upset, but I wouldn't be surprised if you don't see anything at all. It can take up to 24 hours for signs of chocolate toxicity to occur, so monitor him over this time period. Do not let him get ahold of any more cookies! I hope this helps!
