My dog ate health bars. Are they toxic? What should I do right now?

As long as the granola didn't contain chocolate, macadamia nuts or raisins I wouldn't be concerned about toxicity. This could cause some upset stomach however, and since granola can be high in fat you could see pancreatitis develop. I would guess that cardboard would be digested, but if there was any plastic then there could be concern for an obstruction as well. I would recommend monitoring Bear for any vomiting, decreased appetite or diarrhea and contacting your vet right away if you see any of these signs.

If it is just the typical granola bar that only contains a few chips then she is likely going to be ok but again would depend on the amount. If this happened recently within the last 2 hours, there is still time to induce vomiting. You can always contact ASPCS animal poison center to let them know exactly how much chocolate there is which will depend on the type of bars (let them know the kind). If the bar contained chocolate there is potential for toxicity, although I would guess he would need to eat more than a bar to have any problems (knowing his weight would help and you can repost your question). If it didn’t have any chocolate and he didn’t eat the plastic he shouldn’t have any problems.

Oh no, that was naughty of Abby to eat the chocolate protein bar! There is likely not a lot of pure chocolate in a protein bar, so she should be fine. It would take at least 19oz of milk chocolate to cause a moderate to severe toxic reaction in a dog her size, and a protein bar will not contain that much chocolate. I hope this helps :-)

In order to cause toxicity one of these 2.1 oz bars would have to have more than 2 oz of pure cocoa powder. It is not likely coming close to the chocolate content of these bars. so it is unlikely that your dog will suffer from chocolate toxicity.

If this happened recently, ie within the past 2 hours or so, you should take him to a vet for inducing vomiting. If this has been longer then you need to watch your dog for a tummy ache, diarrhea, vomiting, lethargy, as he could get pancreatitis from the food he is not used to. Also the wrappers could cause trouble. Watch his feces, wrappers should show up as they pass through the intestinal canal. If he shows any signs of discomfort, please take him to a veterinarian or Pet ER.

Cocoa powder can be quite toxic, and it would take as little as 1/2 of an ounce to cause symptoms of toxicity. I doubt that there is 1/2 ounce of cocoa in a Quest bar, but it can be very difficult to estimate since the exact amounts of ingredients in processed foods are considered proprietary information. My gut feeling is that Emma will be just fine, but you may want to contact Animal Poison Control to be 100% sure - they have access to a lot of proprietary information and might be better a or to estimate.
