My Shih Tzu ate a chocolate Quest bar. Is the amount of cocoa toxic?

Oh no, that was naughty of Abby to eat the chocolate protein bar! There is likely not a lot of pure chocolate in a protein bar, so she should be fine. It would take at least 19oz of milk chocolate to cause a moderate to severe toxic reaction in a dog her size, and a protein bar will not contain that much chocolate. I hope this helps :-)

In order to cause toxicity one of these 2.1 oz bars would have to have more than 2 oz of pure cocoa powder. It is not likely coming close to the chocolate content of these bars. so it is unlikely that your dog will suffer from chocolate toxicity.

If it is just the typical granola bar that only contains a few chips then she is likely going to be ok but again would depend on the amount. If this happened recently within the last 2 hours, there is still time to induce vomiting. You can always contact ASPCS animal poison center to let them know exactly how much chocolate there is which will depend on the type of bars (let them know the kind). Hi and thanks for your question. If the earth bars had a lot of fat and/or chocolate in them, then that may be a concern. Chocolate can be quite toxic to dogs and a high amount of fat can cause stomach upset and pancreatitis. If the bars had raisins in them, that would also be a red flag. Raisins can cause renal failure in dogs. Macadamia nuts are also another toxic food found in health bars. If these contained anything mentioned above, you may want to see you veterinarian as soon as possible. I hope this helped.

Based on the chocolate toxicity calculator, at Josie's weight, you will see minimal to no reaction from eating this amount of chocolate. You may see some GI upset, such as vomiting and diarrhea, and if you do, I recommend withholding food and feeding a bland diet. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet.

She's really cute! If you're talking about a chocolate flavored rice cereal, there shouldn't be a problem aside from a possible upset stomach from eating something unfamiliar. Chocolate toxicity is serious, but there is so little actual chocolate and therefore very little of the substance called theobromine that is what is toxic to dogs and cats. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is. Unless she got into actual chocolate such as chocolate chips, bakers chocolate or ate a candy bar, she should be fine.

For smaller dogs, this would be concerning. Larger dogs would probably be unaffected by the small amount of chocolate in a treat. If white chocolate was used, it would be safe for dogs. Without seeing an actual label, it is difficult to determine safety. The best option would be to avoid any amount of cacao.
