My dog ate some hair conditioner. Will he be okay? What to do?

It depends on the specific ingredients in the conditioner, but in most cases this does not cause significant problems. The problems are usually restricted to irritation of the stomach and intestines, which will cause vomiting and diarrhea. If he is vomiting profusely or otherwise acting strangely, then it will be best to take him to a vet for treatment. Certain chemicals in hair dye is known to be toxic to dogs, but it usually takes more than a lick to cause serious complications. However, I would expect some vomiting and excessive drooling from this. If you are not seeing this within the first hour after she licked it, then it's a good sign that she will not have any toxic effects. However, you should monitor her for signs of excessive vomiting, difficulty breathing, and/or lethargy as a sign that she is having serious complications. If you notice this, then take her to the vet immediately for treatment. In-fact, if there is any concern about toxicity, then it's best to take her to the vet for treatment and monitoring. If you don't notice any signs of toxicity within the next 12 hours, then most likely she will be fine. For now, it's best to give a little milk (about 1cup) and plenty of water. Without knowing the exact ingredients of the conditioner, I can't say for sure it won't make him sick but typically Jasper would have to ingest it to cause toxic problems. As long as your mom washed it all out, he should be fine but it may dry out his skin and you could see some flakes and dandruff. If you do, you can give him a bath with vitamin E oil to try to add moisture to his skin. I would not use the conditioner again on him. If you are very concerned about the ingredients of the conditioner, I recommend calling the Pet Poison Hotline at 855-764-7661. Shampoo and conditioner will definitely make a dog throw up. This should not be a week-long episode though. They usually throw-up a great deal in the beginning, but are fine after 2-3 days. Usually there are no other ingredients in these products that would cause any other toxicity beyond vomiting, but I would have to see the ingredients list to be sure of that. One possibility is that Frankie got dehydrated during his bouts of vomiting. Dogs can quickly get dehydrated with profuse vomiting and it's not easy for them to recover the lost water. Dehydration actually makes them feel bad and nauseous, which can perpetuate the vomiting and dehydration. If this has been going on for a week, then it's best for Frankie to see a vet. The vet can help determine how severe his condition is and at-least give the necessary treatment for dehydration and vomiting. I recommend you take Frankie to the vet within the next 24 hours. It's best to take the bottles of shampoo/conditioner with you to the vet. For now, you can add rehydration salts or pedialyte to his water. This will help to recover lost water and may make him feel better. I hope that helps and Frankie gets better soon.

Poor Jake! I assume Jake got the tissue after it had been through the full wash cycle, because if so most of the detergent should have rinsed out of it. If he didn't chew too much of the tissue I doubt he ingested that much of the chemicals. The chemicals tend to not be harmful in small quantities, so he should be fine. I would keep a close eye on him for the next 24 hours, he may develop a bit of an upset tummy. If he starts vomiting and can't stop or seems to getting dull I would visit the vet. Otherwise just keep an eye and give him plenty of water.
