My dog ate hair conditioner. Is it toxic? What symptoms to expect?

In small quantities, most products like shampoos and conditioners are not going to be extremely toxic to dogs / cats, aside from potentially causing some mild to moderate gastrointestinal upset. There types of ingredients you have listed are complex chemicals that the majority of veterinarians are not going to be familiar with specifically. If want a full on and more guaranteed answers as to the toxicity of this product, I would recommend contacting pet poison control at (855) 764-7661. This helpline as vets and toxicologists on staff 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to offer assistance to pet owners and veterinarians in need. However, my opinion is that as long as we are only talking about a few licks or a few ounces at most, you are not likely to see any major problems arise. If you do begin to note any evidence of non stop vomiting, diarrhea, dehydration, or coughing, report to your vet right away. Lastly, do not attempt to make Sirius vomit. Generallly, the rule is when a chemical product like a conditioner is consumed, causing vomiting will cause more damage than good. Hope this makes sense.

Certain chemicals in hair dye is known to be toxic to dogs, but it usually takes more than a lick to cause serious complications. However, I would expect some vomiting and excessive drooling from this. If you are not seeing this within the first hour after she licked it, then it's a good sign that she will not have any toxic effects. However, you should monitor her for signs of excessive vomiting, difficulty breathing, and/or lethargy as a sign that she is having serious complications. If you notice this, then take her to the vet immediately for treatment. In-fact, if there is any concern about toxicity, then it's best to take her to the vet for treatment and monitoring. If you don't notice any signs of toxicity within the next 12 hours, then most likely she will be fine. For now, it's best to give a little milk (about 1cup) and plenty of water. I am sorry that Cuddles is trying to eat your hair product but good news she will likely be just fine. I would recommend to keep a close eye on her over the next couple of days for any lethargic, decreased appetite, vomiting or diarrhea. If any abnormal symptoms seen, contact your veterinarian for an exam.

Dove soap isn't toxic, but you may see some GI upset from this. If you see persistent vomiting and diarrhea, bloating, pacing, pain, swelling of the face and muzzle, or difficulty breathing (the last two symptoms could be caused by an allergic reaction to ingredients in the soap), take Zoey into a vet immediately. Shampoo and conditioner will definitely make a dog throw up. This should not be a week-long episode though. They usually throw-up a great deal in the beginning, but are fine after 2-3 days. Usually there are no other ingredients in these products that would cause any other toxicity beyond vomiting, but I would have to see the ingredients list to be sure of that. One possibility is that Frankie got dehydrated during his bouts of vomiting. Dogs can quickly get dehydrated with profuse vomiting and it's not easy for them to recover the lost water. Dehydration actually makes them feel bad and nauseous, which can perpetuate the vomiting and dehydration. If this has been going on for a week, then it's best for Frankie to see a vet. The vet can help determine how severe his condition is and at-least give the necessary treatment for dehydration and vomiting. I recommend you take Frankie to the vet within the next 24 hours. It's best to take the bottles of shampoo/conditioner with you to the vet. For now, you can add rehydration salts or pedialyte to his water. This will help to recover lost water and may make him feel better. I hope that helps and Frankie gets better soon.

Not so good. I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you.
