My dog ate grass and is nauseous. Should I feed her or is it kidneys?

Hello, thank you for your question about Kiyah. Often times when dogs eat grass it is because they are feeling nauseous. Nausea can be a sign of GI upset or other underlying GI disease. If Kiyah is otherwise acting ok and has continued to eat and drink normally, you could continue to monitor her. Additionally, you could offer her a bland/easily digestable diet such as boiled chicken/hamburger and white rice to help settle her stomach. If these symptoms continue or Kiyah begins vomiting, refusing food, or becomes lethargic I would recommend having her seen by your veterinarian. They can examine her and discuss the need for additional diagnostics or treatments. Hope this helps!

I'm so sorry to hear that you are having to deal with kidney disease. One of the things they report in people with kidney disease is nausea from a build up of toxins that the kidneys should be filtering out if they are working properly. If you think nausea may be an issue, I would strongly recommend consulting with your veterinarian about your options for anti-nausea medications. Loss of appetite and vomiting can be observed with many conditions such as gastroenteritis, dietary indiscretion, kidney disease, pancreatitis, among many other possibilities. I recommend that you have Len evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. They would be able to check for these possibilities and others depending on the findings on exam. If she is still not eating then you should take her back to the vet for IV fluid therapy. And more diagnostics. Make sure they did bloodwork to check her kidneys. An abdominal X-Ray or ultrasound may help to diagnose the issue as well. If her kidney enzymes are elevated, that can make her nauseous and not want to eat. IV fluids will help to flush the kidneys. There are also special foods that can help with kidney issues like hills K/D food. If the kidney issue is for sure due to an infection, then hopefully the antibiotics will kick in soon. Sometimes it’s good to give cephalexin with another antibiotic like Baytril if it is a severe infection.

I am sorry to hear that Miley isn’t feeling well. Eating grass can be a sign of nausea. I would prevent her from doing that. If the vomiting continues then she should be evaluated by a veterinarian. If she doesn’t vomit the rest of the day you can consider giving her a small amount of boiled chicken and rice for dinner . It could be Rey is feeling a bit nauseous. Try feeding her a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If this doesn't help her symptoms, she starts vomiting, refuses to eat the diet, vomits water or stops drinking water, develops diarrhea, or becomes very lethargic, take her into a vet immediately. Withhold food for 12-24 hours, then feed a bland diet of boiled white meat chicken (no bones) and white rice in small amounts several times a day for a couple of days. Then slowly add back in her normal diet. If the vomiting continues in the absence of food, she vomits the bland diet, develops diarrhea, stops drinking water, starts vomiting water, or becomes very lethargic, she will need to see a vet right away.
