My dog ate gauze after surgery. When should I worry about blockage?

Some dogs can pass the oddest and largest items you would never imagine, others have a harder time. All you can do is monitor for any vomiting or blood diarrhea. The ones that seem to pass these have no symptoms at all and you may or may not even see them pass it out. If vomiting starts with weight loss or no appetite, then I would get her checked to see if any are obstructed. Usually this only take 24-48 hours to monitor

It is possible that the cloth that Ghontu ate could cause a blockage in her intestines. If this is the case, it could become a life threatening surgical emergency. Thanks for your question. It sounds like you have a naughty boy on your hands. At this point, it sounds like he isn't currently having symptoms. If he stops eating or starts vomiting, you will want to seek veterinary attention. Unfortunately, there are some dogs that are repeat offenders and continue to get themselves into trouble. If not already, he may need to be crated when alone, with nothing but a metal water bowl in the crate with him. I hope it makes it through this and stays out of trouble for a while.

Well that was naughty of Teddy to eat the rug. If he has since eaten well with no vomiting and continues to not vomit, have a normal appetite and use the bathroom fine, he should be ok. Signs of an obstruction are continuous vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, scant (small) feces and lethargy (decreased energy level). I hope that Teddy is able to pass the rug pieces well. If he chewed it well then chances of him passing it are really good. He may have an upset stomach though, at which time you can try a bland diet of boiled plain chicken and rice or cottage cheese to see if it settles things down. Oh Rocky! I would recommend monitoring his eating and defecating closely. It is possible he will pass the material in his feces. IF at any time you feel Rocky is not eating, vomiting or not defecating I would recommend taking Rocky to the vet for x-rays to see if the cloth is causing a blockage of his intestines. IF he is acting normal I would feed him and allow him to have normal activity

If he continues to vomit than you should be worried and have him examined by a vet. Your vet can take an X-ray to look for signs of an obstruction. If the vomiting has resolved than just monitor him for additional signs.

If the vomiting continues than he could have a blockage. If he is otherwise acting ok than you could withhold food for the day and then try a bland diet of boil chicken and white rice. If the vomiting resolves, continue feeding the bland diet for a few days and then gradually switch back to his regular food. If the vomiting and diarrhea continues then he needs to be examined by a veterinarian to determine the cause. Your veterinarian can take an x-ray to help diagnose and then determine the best way to treat his problem.
