My dog ate Excedrin. What toxic symptoms should I watch for and when?

It is not recommended that you give your dog this medication. Excedrin Migraine has three ingredients: Acetaminophen, Aspirin and Caffeine. None of which are good for dogs. Acetaminophen and aspirin should definitely NOT be given together to dogs. This can cause severe gastrointestinal issues (often times perforating stomach/intestinal ulcers which can they die from). Oh dear! I'm afraid that B needs to be seen by an emergency vet immediately. The toxic dose of Tylenol in dogs is considered to be 50-100 mg/kg. If B ate 12 500 mg tablets, this is a total of 6000 mg - with his body weight, this works out to 600 mg/kg, which is far above the amount that can cause serious toxicity issues or even death. I would recommend taking him to your nearest emergency clinic right away for treatment.

She did eat a higher dose than recommended (10mg per pound of body weight at the highest, so 60mg) but after 1 hour, the aspirin has already been absorbed by her system . The effects of acetaminophen poisoning in dogs are quite serious, often causing non-repairable liver damage. Dogs will typically experience acetaminophen toxicity at over 75 mg per kg body weight - Lady Girl ingested 1000mg and the toxic dose for her would be around 2,200 mg (if she truly is 65#). She may be OK or she may get sick. There is no way to know. At this point you will just have to monitor her and see. The most common symptoms that you may notice in pets suffering from acetaminophen toxicity include: Brownish-gray colored gums Labored breathing Swollen face, neck or limbs Hypothermia (reduced body temperature) Vomiting Jaundice (yellowish color to skin, whites of eyes), due to liver damage Coma If you notice any of those signs you need to get her to a vet right away. If she has a problem with her hock (ankle) you need to get her to a vet for an exam. That way you get a proper diagnosis as to what is actually wrong with her leg and then get a medication made for dogs to help her. This is a large overdose of aspirin (four times the high end of the dose), and for such as young puppy this is extremely concerning. Please take her into an ER vet clinic; if there isn't one in your area, there will be a vet on call for emergencies. As far as the laxative itself, this will probably cause diarrhea but would not be expected to cause any serious toxicity issues. The barbiturate in the tablet may make her tired and sleepy (had she taken it), the caffeine could make her agitated (that is toxic , however there is not enough caffeine in the tablet to be seriously detrimental), but the Ibuprofen would be the most dangerous ingredient (300mg). Your dog has 15 lbs so a dose of 175 mg can cause a stomach upset, and higher could cause liver damage, However since she has not eaten the tablet, there is no worry and she should be fine.
