My dog ate Dayquil cold medicine. Is it poisonous? What do I do?

Although the amount your dog has ingested is a lot more than the recommended amounts for dogs, it should not cause toxicity if your dog is over 5 kg. If he is under 5, he could be in danger and it would be a god idea to take him to the vet right away to get an injection to induce vomiting.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. For that amount he could have issues with both the Acetominophen (30mg/kg) which could cause KCS, which is a problem with the eyes. So for this you will want to get a product like 'Refresh', or some other eye lubricant with no medication and lube his eyes twice a day for the next couple weeks. The biggest concern is the decongestant. If the box says the ingredient is phenylephrine 5mg then you shouldn't be concerned, however if the ingredient is pseudoephedrine then you will want to have Gideon into the vet right away. Otherwise, monitor for signs of anxiousness, hyperactivity, inability to settle, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or increased drinking and peeing. If these occur then go to your vet. If your dog has any clinical signs, or any other underlying disease conditions (which could affect how these drugs affect him, such as liver or kidney disease), then I would bring him right away to the vet. To be extra precautious you could take him to a vet to get him to vomit (remove any remaining toxin in his stomach) however this isn't as effective for the liquid capsules as they absorb quickly, and activated charcoal which will bind any other toxin left in his stomach. This particular medication has two medications that should be fairly well tolerated by dogs but can cause mild sedation as it contains an antihistamine and dextromethorphan. Phenylephrine, however, could be toxic due to cardiac side effects. Also, there may be sweeteners such as xylitol which is highly toxic to dogs. My recommendation would be to call the ASPCA poison control at (888) 426-4435 and make a visit to the vet as soon as you can with Happy this evening as he could be experiencing side effects of the medication or have a different problem entirely. Coughing in the first place is worrisome as older dogs are highly prone to heart problems which can lead to both the cough and the lethargy. I hope this helps, and I hope Happy gets better soon!

If the entire intact pill was in the vomit you probably don't need to worry and she may be tired after vomiting. If it seemed to be punctured or partially dissolved then there might be a chance for toxicity depending on what type of DayQuil it was and what the active ingredients are. If it was punctured repost your question and either take a picture of the box or list the active ingredients.

I would recommend that you call ASPCA's poison control number. That number is 888-426-4435. There is a $65 charge, but they will be able to best advise you. She will likely be fine. Keep an eye on her for an upset tummy (vomiting or diarrhea or lack of appetite). Luckily she is a large dog so this small amount of medicine shouldn’t cause any issues. If you have any concerns, I would contact your vet to take a look at her. i hope this helps!

The concern here is the Tylenol, which is toxic to dogs. Yes, it is pointless to induce vomiting now, it's too late. Tylenol does cause irreversible liver damage, so I think it's best to get DiNozzo checked out by a vet immediately to be safe. Please take him into a vet now. Best of luck.
