My dog ate human cold medicine. Is it an emergency? He's lethargic.

I have looked up the ingredients of this cough drop, and luckily it doesn't contain xylitol, which is highly toxic to dogs. The rest of the ingredients like menthol, eucalyptus oil, colors and flavors cause GI upset. I'd keep a close eye on her for now. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy, or a loss of appetite, please take her into an ER vet immediately. I hope this helps!

Coughing, especially when accompanied by nasal discharge, can be a sign of an upper respiratory infection. However, it can also be a sign of a lower respiratory issue, such as pneumonia and it is concerning that Honey has some episodes of lethargy, as this indicates that she is not feeling well. I recommend having her seen by a vet as soon as possible to determine what is going on and begin the appropriate treatment. I hope Honey starts feeling better soon!

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. For that amount he could have issues with both the Acetominophen (30mg/kg) which could cause KCS, which is a problem with the eyes. So for this you will want to get a product like 'Refresh', or some other eye lubricant with no medication and lube his eyes twice a day for the next couple weeks. The biggest concern is the decongestant. If the box says the ingredient is phenylephrine 5mg then you shouldn't be concerned, however if the ingredient is pseudoephedrine then you will want to have Gideon into the vet right away. Otherwise, monitor for signs of anxiousness, hyperactivity, inability to settle, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or increased drinking and peeing. If these occur then go to your vet. If your dog has any clinical signs, or any other underlying disease conditions (which could affect how these drugs affect him, such as liver or kidney disease), then I would bring him right away to the vet. To be extra precautious you could take him to a vet to get him to vomit (remove any remaining toxin in his stomach) however this isn't as effective for the liquid capsules as they absorb quickly, and activated charcoal which will bind any other toxin left in his stomach. I am having difficulty finding information on Copastin or it's active ingredient cloperastine hydrochloride. I see that it's an antihistamine and antitussive. While antihistamines and antitussives can be used in dogs, without additional information, I cannot say if it is harmful or not to Jack. I recommend calling a local vet to see if you need to bring Jack for treatment.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Pete! Was Pete put on antibiotics when he was seen? Kennel cough is caused by many viral, bacterial or mycoplasma organisms. There is only the ONE vaccine for Bordatella. A lot of dogs sadly get a different bacteria or virus that causes the kennel cough signs. Kennel cough is very goose honkey. Since Pete is lethargic, has a decreased appetite, is pacing at night and is 12 years old he should be rechecked. I would recommend X-rays of his chest. If his heart and lungs look clear then either put him on antibiotics and a cough suppressant if he isn't on anything or change the medications since he isn't improving and is actually getting worse. I worry about older dogs with possible kennel cough. The young and the old have increased risk for kennel cough to progress to pneumonia. I hope this helps and I wish Pete the very best!
