My dog ate DayQuil, vomited, now very lethargic. Is this normal?

Although the amount your dog has ingested is a lot more than the recommended amounts for dogs, it should not cause toxicity if your dog is over 5 kg. If he is under 5, he could be in danger and it would be a god idea to take him to the vet right away to get an injection to induce vomiting.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. For that amount he could have issues with both the Acetominophen (30mg/kg) which could cause KCS, which is a problem with the eyes. So for this you will want to get a product like 'Refresh', or some other eye lubricant with no medication and lube his eyes twice a day for the next couple weeks. The biggest concern is the decongestant. If the box says the ingredient is phenylephrine 5mg then you shouldn't be concerned, however if the ingredient is pseudoephedrine then you will want to have Gideon into the vet right away. Otherwise, monitor for signs of anxiousness, hyperactivity, inability to settle, vomiting, diarrhea, weakness, or increased drinking and peeing. If these occur then go to your vet. If your dog has any clinical signs, or any other underlying disease conditions (which could affect how these drugs affect him, such as liver or kidney disease), then I would bring him right away to the vet. To be extra precautious you could take him to a vet to get him to vomit (remove any remaining toxin in his stomach) however this isn't as effective for the liquid capsules as they absorb quickly, and activated charcoal which will bind any other toxin left in his stomach. She will likely be fine. Keep an eye on her for an upset tummy (vomiting or diarrhea or lack of appetite). Luckily she is a large dog so this small amount of medicine shouldn’t cause any issues. If you have any concerns, I would contact your vet to take a look at her. i hope this helps!

Typically allergy pills will make your pet a little lethargic, that is a normal side effect. And if he just got 1 pill there shouldn’t be any toxicity concerns. Poor Dough Boy! At this point, he should have an abdominal x-ray to make sure there isn't an obstruction, especially if the shot she gave him was an anti-vomiting injection and he is still vomiting. If the x-ray is negative than he should also have blood-work done to look for abnormalities as it is concerning that he is vomiting, lethargic, and losing weight. Besides, pushing the pill all the way back in his throat and holding his mouth closed until he swallows, there isn't much more you can do to administer an oral medication unless he would eat it in a treat. However, it sounds like he would just vomit the medicine back up. Please have the vet take a look at him again for a work-up. Hope he feels better soon!

It can cause irritation or ulcers in some cases. This could be the cause of her lethargy today. I recommend that she sees a veterinarian as soon as possible to have her evaluated. She could even be experiencing an unrelated coincidental issue such as neck and/or back pain as this is common in small breed dogs.
