My Shih Tzu puppy ate a cooked lamb bone. Is he in danger? What now?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. You need to monitor your Dolbie for the next 24-48hrs. Bones usually are digested in the stomach but they may form gastro-intestinal obstruction or cause constipation. If Dolbie starts to vomit, strain to pass faeces, is passing stools with blood or not passing any stools at all for longer than 24hrs, you will have to take him to your local vets right away. If after 48hrs he does not develop any symptoms, it will mean that he is out of danger.

Hello, sorry to hear about Ali. Chicken bones in general are hollow and do not pose a high risk to your pet as they can be digested by the stomach unlike other times of bones (beef or pork). You may monitor Ali for any signs of abdominal pain/discomfort, vomiting, or persistent diarrhea. Occasionally, pets who get into things may develop a decreased appetite and soft stools for a few days that should resolve on their own. As long as they chewed it up sufficiently, it should pass. Larger pieces may cause stomach upset or pose a risk of obstruction. You can monitor for lethargy, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, straining to defecate or loss of appetite. These are symptoms that should be addressed by your veterinarian.

Unfortunately without seeing Cozy in person, I can't say for certain she will be ok. This may pass without problem, but it could cause an obstruction. If you see vomiting, diarrhea, anorexia, an inability to pass poop, or lethargy, have her seen by a vet immediately. Best of luck.

I would watch him for now and if he begins to develop symptoms such as vomiting, inappetance, lethargy, abdominal pain, etc. then I would recommend having a veterinarian examine him. I would also recommend having abdominal x-rays performed to see where the bone is. I hope this helps! If it happened in the past hour I would recommend heading to an emergency vet - they can potentially take an x-ray and determine whether or not it would be worthwhile to attempt to induce vomiting. If the bone was sharp or very large there are risks to inducing vomiting so it may not be worthwhile. Unfortunately I find that pork bones in particular can cause obstructions or constipation. If the vet decides there is too much risk to inducing vomiting they may prescribe some medications to help protect the stomach or a diet change while monitoring closely for any vomiting, decrease in appetite, or difficulty defecating.

As long as he is showing no signs of abdominal discomfort, obstruction or vomiting I would wait it out and give it tim; it may disolve slowly or be passed normally in faeces once smaller. Any signs of gastrointestinal distress would require an urgent vet visit as surgical removal may be required if it becomes an obstruction.
