My 4-month-old puppy ate cooked chicken bones. What should I do?

Hello. As long as Bandit did not show any indication or irritation or problems swallowing the chicken bone, he should be fine. The bone will most likely soften in his stomach & be digested. Just watch him for the next few days for any signs of digestive distress including vomiting, a loss of appetite, bloating or abdominal pain. Unfortunately after a chicken bone is eating, there's nothing that can be done. It's not recommended to induce vomiting, as the bone can get stuck in the esophagus or cause trauma to it. I would monitor Apollo for sign of obstruction and damage to the intestinal tract, which include vomiting, diarrhea, bloody feces, anorexia, constipation, vomiting blood, and lethargy. Should you see any of those signs, you will need to take Apollo into a vet immediately. You can give him a slice of whole wheat bread with every meal to form a ball of ingesta around the bone and cushion it as it passes through the GI tract.

Instead, you should monitor Riku at home for the next 24-48hrs for symptoms of vomiting, lack of appetite, lethargy difficulties to defecate. If you see any of them, you should take him to your local vets for an appointment as these symptoms would suggest gastrointestinal obstruction. However, most likely the little bones will be digested rapidly in the stomach and Riku will not show any worrying symptoms at all.

Cooked chicken bones are a bit more concerning than raw bones, as they are more likely to splinter as they pass through the gastrointestinal tract. Most bones (even cooked ones) can pass without a problem. Keep a close eye on Bonnie's overall energy level and appetite. Lethargy and inappetence can be associated with perforation of the gastrointestinal tract, as can vomiting or diarrhea, particularly if blood is present. WIth Bonnie's chicken allergy, I imagine that she's more likely to experience stomach upset with vomiting and diarrhea that may or may not be associated with the bones in the chicken breast. As Dr. Graben mentioned, she could also experience itchy skin due to her chicken allergy. If you notice any lethargy, loss of appetite, significant vomiting or diarrhea, or any blood in vomit or stool, then be sure to seek veterinary attention immediately. You can offer a bland diet of boiled lean ground beef or turkey, mixed with white rice for the next 5-7 days to try to give the chicken time to pass before mixing in her normal dog food over another 5-7 days. I'm sorry to hear that Rocket got into some chicken bones - sounds like he will need the trash can locked away from him from now on. While most chicken bones can be digested by the stomach acid, some larger pieces may start migrating through the intestines before the stomach has had a chance to fully break them down. This makes sense with how you are already seeing pieces in his stool. Since he is vomiting and having diarrhea, he is likely experiencing some significant gastroenteritis, or inflammation/irritation of the GI tract. This is most often self-limiting, and should resolve on its own with a few days of a bland diet. I recommend feeding Rocket a diet of boiled rice and boiled chicken (no bones!) in a ratio of 2 parts rice to 1 part meat, for the next 2-3 days. If Rocket continues to vomit, or the diarrhea becomes bloody, I recommend having him seen a by veterinarian. A big concern would be that one of the bones has become lodged in his intestines, causing a blockage. I hope this is helpful - best of luck with Rocket!

Poor dog. Unfortunately bones have the potential to cause intestinal obstruction in pets, so you want to monitor him/her for he next 24-48 hrs for signs of trouble. The rotisserie chicken can also cause an acute inflammatory response of the pancreas (pancreatitis), so monitoring for that is also advised. Watch out for signs that include: excessive vomiting (even water), lack of appetite, and abdominal pain. If you see these symptoms then your pet should seek medical attention by your local vet immediately for a proper care. In the meantime you should feed your pet a bland diet of plain boiled chicken and rice or cottage cheese to help the stomach settle. You can also offer your pet 1/2-1 slice of bread (depending on the size of your pet) twice a day to help bind the bones and encourage passage through the gut. Also taking your pet on 20-30 minute brisk walks twice a day can help promote GI (gastrointestinal) motility and encourage passage of the bones as wel. If there is some diarrhea but Indy is still eating and playing and active, im still not terribly concerned. But if vomiting starts or you’re seeing lethargy or loss of appetite, it’s time to head in to the vet as soon as possible. Hope this helps and best of luck to you and Indy!
