My dog might have eaten concrete. Should I worry? What are the risks?

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 11 years and 6 months old | 76 lbs

Dog may have eaten a small rectangle shaped piece of loose concrete. I don’t know for sure. I saw him go over to it and I am not sure if he got all of it. I tried to get him away from it. He did crunch something but not sure if it was the dirt underneath it is not. I am worried.

He should be fine. Many dogs eat rocks and other things they are not supposed to. They usually pass through into the poop without causing a problem. Go ahead and feed him his regular food to help it pass through quickly. I would watch him closely. If he starts vomiting it may be stuck in his stomach, or if he has trouble pooping or becomes lethargic it could be in his intestines. Then I would bring him in for an exam and X-rays. Concrete is not toxic, but it's definitely a concern for causing an obstruction in the stomach if a big piece was eaten. If he ate it within the last three hours, then it's possible that it can be retrieved from the stomach if you take him to the vet. This will require x-rays to see how much was eaten and possibly anesthesia and special instrumentation. This would be expected to be somewhat costly though - especially at an emergency clinic. This is the best option.

The other option is waiting to see if it passes OK. Many times these objects are passed with no problem, but there's no way to gauruntee that he will be OK.
Normal GI transit time is 3-5 days for such things. During this time you would just be waiting to see if he has any signs of an obstruction. Signs of an obstructions are vomiting, not defecating, acting very painful/depressed and a decrease in appetite. If you notice these signs, then Riley would need to go to the vet immediately for emergency surgery.

Unfortunately, rocks of certain sized can get stuck in the GI tract and cause an obstruction so just watch him closely. An obstruction will usually cause vomiting and a lack of appetite. I actually had to surgically remove a rock from my own personal dog. Silly dogs will eat anything. Since he has a tendency to eat rocks, I would consider putting him in a crate when you aren't able to supervise him outside for his safety. I understand this may not be possible, just understand that he could obstruct if he eats a rock that is too large. In the meantime, I would feed him a high fiber canned food for a couple of days to help him pass this rock. I hope this helps!

Hi! Cute puppy. If you arent sure diamond are a rock, I wouldn't worry. Hut what you would watch for is vomiting, diarrhea and decreased appetite. Depending on size of rock, most of them do pass. Hi. If Maggie just ate one small rock there shouldn't be much of a concern. Keep an eye on her eating and pooping habits but if all is normal it should pass. Be certain to watch and make sure this is not a common thing for her to do. Dogs that continuously eat rocks or eat a large number can become obstructed. If you notice Maggie having vomiting or trouble defecating then have her checked by a vet.

Hello. Stones can either pass through the system without too much of an issue, or they can cause a huge problem and require surgery to take out. Unfortunately you are at a waiting game. If Paddy is eating/drinking, and normal in energy, then just keep watching him and don't worry. If he is fine after a few days you are OK. If Paddy starts vomiting, stops eating, is weak, sore when you touch his abdomen, or is having trouble pooping or not passing any feces, they you need to get him to a vet ASAP for some x-rays and possible surgery. My dog ate a small stone. Will it pass, and what signs should I watch for?

It will likely pass. The symptoms of an issue to look out for including vomiting/especially within an hour of eating, straining to defecate, not popping. If you are willing to sift through each bowel movement until you find the small stone, that will provide additional peace of mind. Otherwise screening abdominal x-rays at your vet can determine whether the stone is stuck somewhere and are recommended especially if vomiting/in appearance or straining to defecate are noted. My puppy swallowed a small rock. Is she safe? What should I do?

Whenever foreign objects like this are ingested, there is no guarantee that they will pass. The best advice is to monitor Honey for the next 24-48 hrs for any signs of an intestinal obstruction, which includes: excessive vomiting (food and water), lack of appetite, few to no feces, and severe lethargy. If seen, then its best to take Honey to your local vet for an x-ray of her belly and further care. Hopefully the rock was small enough to pass on its own. You can try feeding her 1 piece of bread to help bind the rock and hopefully help it pass. Give her plenty of access to water as well. Best of luck to you and your fur baby Honey moving forward.
