My dog ate chocolate cake, is hyperactive and panting. What to do?

Fast respiration can be a symptoms of chocolate intoxication but it could also be a sign of nausea, abdominal pain, general discomfort. If Teal continues to pant or develops other symptoms of chocolate intoxication, like racing heart, generalized tremors, restlessness, nervousness you should take her to your local vets as an emergency.

The amount of chocolate he ate in those cookies and the size he is makes me feel that he's probably going to be fine. The amount of chocolate and the darkness of it are the main factors, along with the size of your dog in determining if he will have adverse effects. Monitor him for vomiting, diarrhea, seizures, muscle rigidity, rapid breathing without exertion, or increased body temperature. If he displays ony of these symptoms, get him to a vet right away.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but my estimate is that it would be at-most enough to cause a moderate to severe reaction. Rosie is already showing signs of a mild reaction, which is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Rosie to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every two hours for any further signs of toxicity. Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Trixie should be fine! This amount of chocolate even if it was dark or milk chocolate isn't toxic. She could have tummy upset from the other parts of the biscuit so feeding her a bland diet for a few days isn't wrong. I wish you and Trixie the best!

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I’m not terribly concerned about this. There is not enough chocolate to really affect a dog this size. Possible concerns would be an obstruction from the wrappers if he ate those too OR pancreatitis flare up if there is alot of fat in those cakes. Otherwise, I’d monitor for vomiting and diarrhea. As long as he is eating and acting normally, there is little cause for concern. Best wishes to you and Manson.

The signs you are describing do sounds like a toxicity. Chocolate toxicity depends on the size of the dog, amount of chocolate consumed, and the type of chocolate, with dark chocolate being more toxic. I recommend keeping a close eye on Peyton if she is calming down, but she should be seen by a vet if you are concerned that she is not acting like herself or if she develops tremors, seizures, or vomiting. A 40 pound husky would need to ingest quite a bit more chocolate to cause signs of toxicity, and you would see signs of toxicity no more than 12 hours after ingestion. I’d be worried that Suka’s panting and elevated heart rate could be unrelated. Panting can be a sign of pain or anxiety and if it continues you may want to see your veterinarian.
