My dog ate chocolate and is pacing and panting. Is she poisoned?

Hello and thank you for contacting Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. 100g of dark chocolate is a lot for a small breed dog, like Teal. Fast respiration can be a symptoms of chocolate intoxication but it could also be a sign of nausea, abdominal pain, general discomfort. If Teal continues to pant or develops other symptoms of chocolate intoxication, like racing heart, generalized tremors, restlessness, nervousness you should take her to your local vets as an emergency.

It's difficult to know how much the actual cocoa content is in this, but my estimate is that it would be at-most enough to cause a moderate to severe reaction. Rosie is already showing signs of a mild reaction, which is hyperactivity. Further signs of toxicity can be vomiting, tremors and seizures. If you notice any of these signs, then it's best to take Rosie to a vet for treatment/monitoring, because chocolate toxicity can be deadly. Unfortunately, there is not much that can be done at home for this. It's best to make sure she has plenty of water and that you check her every two hours for any further signs of toxicity. A 40 pound husky would need to ingest quite a bit more chocolate to cause signs of toxicity, and you would see signs of toxicity no more than 12 hours after ingestion. I’d be worried that Suka’s panting and elevated heart rate could be unrelated. Panting can be a sign of pain or anxiety and if it continues you may want to see your veterinarian.

It's best to take her to the vet considering the amount of chocolate ingested is unknown and she was vomiting (an early sign of chocolate toxicity). It's also concerning that she ate the wrappers, because these can cause problems in the intestines as well. The vets will be able to monitor Rane for further signs of toxicity and give medication as necessary to keep things from getting worse. I hope that helps and all is well with Rane.

That's a fair amount of chocolate, and if any of those chocolates were dark chocolate, that is very concerning. Dark chocolate is the most toxic type, and takes the least amount to cause toxicity. At this time frame I would've expected her to have more signs of toxicity if she was going to have issue. However she could still have mild stomach upset so watch her for loose stools/diarrhea and decreased appetite. If she is fine after 24-36 hours she's unlikely to have any issues.
