My dog ate a lot of carpet. Is this an emergency? What to do?

No, this will not heal on it's own if this has been going on for a week. It's extremely serious Bentley can't keep any food down, and I would be very concerned this carpeting and drywall could be causing an obstruction. This is a medical emergency, and he has to see a vet now. Please take him into one immediately.

How small is small? If it was a very small piece it should pass on it's own through his GI tract. If it was a medium to large piece then he should see a vet as that could get stuck in his intestinal tract. Any time a dog ingests something abnormal they should be examined by a vet.

Stuffing can act as a gastrointestinal foreign body that results in obstruction of the bowels. If vomiting is persistent, this is a strong indication that there may be either a partial or complete obstruction preventing food and water from moving forward in the GI tract. An abdominal x-ray would be the next best step to determine if your pet has a radiographic abdominal pattern consistent with obstruction. This should be done asap (as in today), because dehydration and irritation/trauma to the GI tract will continue worsening the longer it is present. If there is an obstruction, abdominal surgery may be necessary to remove it. And that's the case, we want your pet to be as stable as possible for the surgery. The longer the delay, the more weak and dehydrated your pet will be, and thus potentially less stable for surgery. She could have an intestinal obstruction or possibly just an upset stomach. She should be examined by a vet to determine if she has an obstruction and your vet can take an abdominal x-ray to evaluate. She would need surgery to remove the towel, if an obstruction is found. If your vet does not see evidence of an obstruction than he/she can prescribe medications to help treat the vomiting.

Hello, I am very sorry to hear about Sandy. Depending on the amount ingested or if he chewed the pieces or ingested them in big chunks, this may or may not cause a problem. If this happened recently you could bring Sandy to your veterinarian to try and induce vomiting and get rid of the foam. If it has been longer than 1-2 hours ago I would recommend continuing to monitor Sandy. It is possible that he will experience GI upset secondary to this material since it is foreign to his GI tract. It is also possible that the foam could lead to an obstruction if a large amount was ingested. I would recommend monitoring him for any vomiting, diarrhea, inappetance, or lethargy. If he develops any of these signs I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. Poor Ashley! Diarrhea and vomiting could be caused by parasites, change in diet toxin ingestion, infectious diseases, blockage in the intestines caused by ingestion of a foreign body, or a mass/growth in the gastrointestinal tract. Based on what she threw up, I'm concerned that there may be more string/ toy stuffing causing a blockage in Ashley's gastrointestinal tract. It is important that you have Ashley seen by a veterinarian immediately to help determine the cause of the symptoms, as if there is a blockage it could be life threatening, and she may need surgery to resolve it. Your vet may want to check her bloodwork and take x-rays to help determine what is going on with Ashley and to start appropriate treatment.
