My dog ate a spoonful of blackcurrant jam. Should I be worried?

Hello. This is always a bit of a quandary because there are no hard rules for raisin & grape consumption in small amounts. A few raisins in a 60-pound dog is probably or no consequence, but some dogs can react to just one. Personally, I would just watch Buddy. Most problems will develop in 6-24 hours, & consist of vomiting &/or diarrhea. If any of these should develop, get to your vet immediately. No vomiting or diarrhea by 48 hours, then he will be fine. The plant leaves and branches are different from the fruit, so your dog should be just fine--plus that was a small amount of jam anyway for a large dog! I doubt that volume of sugar will make her sick either. Hope that helps!

This is the smallest amount of raisin consumption ever documented that caused acute damage to the kidneys. Raisins 0.11 oz/kg Ziggy is 6 lbs or 2.7 kg. 2.7 kg x .11 ozs = 0.3 ounces of raisins for his body weight. However, SMALLER amounts could also cause problems - we really don't know exactly what the minimum dose is. Also, not every dog or cat is susceptible - many animals can tolerate large quantities of grapes or raisins without problems. Nobody knows what the patient risk factors are (other than ingestion). While many grape jams / jellies are filled with primarily sugar and flavoring, some of these products do contain real grapes, which can be quite toxic to dogs if ingested. Stella will likely be fine, especially if she is acting completely normal. However, to establish a baseline, you can always take her to the veterinarian for an examination and have her blood tested to make sure her kidney values are not affected. To my knowledge raisins have to be ingested to have any concerns. However, it has only been in the last 12 years that we have known raisins are problematic to some dogs, and there is still information we don’t know about the toxicity and why some dogs are affected and others aren’t. It is never wrong to have him evaluated by an emergency veterinarian, but I feel the risk is minimal if no raisins were ingested. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Nutella can be toxic not because of the amount of chocolate (which is known to be minimal) but for the fat content (the same for maple syrup). Toxicity would depend on his size/weight and amount ingested. Gastrointestinal signs like vomiting and diarrhoea will probably occur but you should not notice anything else if the quantity ingested is minimal (please give us more indications about it). As a general approach I would recommend close monitoring and withhold food for the next 12 hours. Start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if you notice diarrhoea, vomiting, lethargy or inappetence or any other sign you may be worried about.
